Plug in directly to the amp strum it switch it turn it up and down if you get nothing then its your pedal.
You know in the studio I use a line 6 guitar floor pod they are easy and user friendly and wallet friendly.

Your setup doesn't look too bad to me!
Yes, the bridgesaddles are supposed to kinda follow the radius of the fretboard at least a little.
You could improve that a bit. Lower E saddle is way lower than the rest.

Experiment a little until it feels right to you.

I can't see anything in your pictures which might create the sound you described.

Not necessarily!
There are good and worse pedals as well as good and worse rack effects.
I've been doing fine with pedals all my life, I never had a rack.

As Donny has said: check your guitar without effects. Can you get that sound again?
