I got my Mexican Strat a few months ago, and after I brought it home I noticed that some of the pickups are rusted. I forgot about it for a while but i noticed them again. Is this normal, and if not what can I do to get rid of the rust.

P.S. Do rusted pickups sound different than non-rusted ones?

Thanks.

The pups used in the Mexi-Strats are often pretty bad. My suggestion is to replace the pups with better ones. I put Lace Sensors in mine and it was a new guitar. Suddenly it had the tone of a much more expensive strat.

I gotta ask ya though...what kind of conditions is the guitar stored in? Is it exposed to high humidity? Stored in it's case? Did someone spill a beer on it? ( I hate when that happens) If your in a high humidity place, like Florida, I'd suggest keeping it in it's case/gig bag with a dessicant pouch or two to absorb the ambient moisture. Humidity control is important in guitars, especially acoustics.

Also......if the posts on your pups are rusty I'd wonder about the condition of your pots too.

Rusty pole pieces??? That's odd, my mexican strat is about 8 years old and it stays out of the case all the time, it doesn't get any special treatment like being wiped down after playing or anything like that. I also live in a very old house that has a high moisture content sometimes and with all this, my pole pieces are rust free, their alittle tarnished but no there's no rust.

My bridge on the other hand is rusty, but that's from the sweat of my hand from playing.

Sounds like your guitar deliberately got wet some how.

During shipping it probably humid in the truck. I wish I looked closely when I bought it but whatever. I don't think that the rust will make a huge difference.

A little rust ain't gonna hurt the pole pieces. Heck people pay extra for that on a relic!!!

Yeah, chris does have a point.

If the rust bothers you that much, you could get a dremel with alittle wire brush (like you would find on a bench grinder) and take your guitar apart and pull the covers off and brush that rust off. If you do that, keep in mind not to let the pole pieces get hot while brushing, excessive heat will damage a pickup.

Some 0000 Steel wool will take the rust off too.

I'll just leave the pups alone lol. People pay a ton for guitars with some wear and tear. Look at the EVH replica guitar going for 25,000 (http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/produc ... =104226733
I got a little w and t for only $440.00!

sorry for shouting...but don't use steel wool/brush etc on a magnet. If you have to clean the rust, use a 3-M pad - plastic wont shed bits of metal that will stick to your magnets.

As for replacing the MIMs...the pickups have their own vibe - more output & mids than a stock Strat, if you like 'em keep 'em. If you want some more crispy, vintagy highs, then consider replacement.
