I couldn't agree more. Every solid body Fender is, in a sense, a partscaster - even if all the parts were bolted together in the factory. That's the gem in Leo's thinking.

But we've been down that road before (some of you many, many times)... so I probably shouldn't have typed this 8)

A good way to find out when it was made is to look at the routes in the body cavety. I seem to recall that when Fender changed to the American Series in aboout 2000, they went back to a 3 route pickup configuration. Very similar to the way were cut back in the day.

From about '87-'99 all American Std. had 1 big open square rout underneith the pickguard that has come to be called, "The Swimming Pool."

I hope this helps.

The route changeover wasn't necessarily so cut-and-dried. I have read that Fender kind of "phased in" the HSH routing during 1998/1999 - so you could find either the HSH or the universal route on them during this time period. I've always assumed it was as they used up bodies stockpiled at the factory - once all the universal routed black bodies were used up, the next batch would have had the HSH route; etc. However, I'm not sure if the changeover started sometime in 1998 or sometime in 1999 - the American Deluxe Strats were the first ones to get the HSH routing, and they came out roughly in March 1998; any changes to the American Standards would have happened no earlier than later in 1998.

You are absolutely correct that all American Series had the HSH routing; their bodies also had other changes to the contour, horns, etc. to make them closer to the vintage-style contours.

Thanks for information I`ll look under pickguard and insert photos ,I think it is HSH style (but I`am not sure) - I confident that there is no swimming pool. Can You tell me is the glued part of paper usual practice for Fender? http://www.pictureshack.ru/images/31167_IMG_0560.JPG

Yes. The paper is quite common on Fender necks.

This piece of paper is the other reason that discouraged me because when I was removing neck I tore it , paper was glued like it was sticking there for so long time and neck never removed , You can see it on this photo http://www.pictureshack.ru/images/72341_IMG_0559.JPG

As much as I felt that the Am Std of the '80s and '90s was really a nice guitar, it was the body contours that I felt could some needed work. I really love the changes that Fender made with Am Series guitars.

I have a few questions about your 1999 Am Std:

Are the pup magnets all the same hight?
Are the Tuning keys stagard hights and is there 1 string tree?
Are the sides of the neck rolled or do they have hard edges?

The reason I ask these question is that you can't go by S/N or date stamps to conferm a model of Fender guitars.

Are the pup magnets all the same hight? (No, than Am. Series Strat)
Are the Tuning keys stagard hights and is there 1 string tree? (Yes, Am. Series Strat)
Are the sides of the neck rolled or do they have hard edges? (Rolled, Am. Series Strat)

Am Std. Strats have 2 string trees, tuning keys that are the same hights, the sides of the neck are much harder edged, the body contours are also harder edged as well and the platics parts are parchment.

bassmanden - I should have put in more of an explanation in my post a couple of days ago. Yes, those are the flat polepiece pickups as used on American Standards (from first production in late 1986 until the end of production in mid-2000). If the pickguard is from the same date as the body then it should have the "Delta Tone" wiring - the bridge pickup should have a slightly higher output than the other two (it's not super hot, just slightly overwound); the lower tone control should be the "no load" pot that has a detent just past "10" that takes the tone control out of the circuit and it functions for both the middle and bridge pickups. Earlier American Standards had a TBX tone control with a detent at "5" for the middle and bridge pickups.

I would go under the assumption that someone swapped the neck on this guitar. The body with HSH routing is correct for a 1998 American Standard. The pickups look correct for a 1998 (assuming it has the proper wiring). The neck and neck plate are from a 2006 American Series Strat. The case may or may not be from 1998 - I just don't remember when Fender stopped using those red logo case and switched to the case that had a larger Fender logo molded on the lid. However, from what I remember the red logo cases were a bit nicer than the later cases.

I hope all that helps.

John C, it seems You know every detail in Fender guitar building. Thanks for help, what about one more attribute (it was already talked here little) I recognized that high of pickups magnets sometimes can be different sometimes on the one level (like on my Guitar) is my variant usual for 90-s ore 2000-s Fender Strats??? And one more, do the 2000-s strats have smaller surface radius of the neck than 90-s?

Flat polepiece (polepieces are the magnets) pickups were stock for American Standards in the era of the date on the body of your guitar. They were used from first production at the end of 1986 until the American Standard was discontinued circa July 2000. Fender went back to a staggered height polepiece pickups on the American Series Stratocaster, which came out in July 2000. They have continued to use staggered height polepiece pickups even though they brought back the American Standard name in 2008.

In terms of neck radius - no, these all have the 9.5" radius. I think the neck shape has evolved over the years; they started rolling the fingerboard edges with the American Series in July 2000, and they were some other slight changes when the "new" American Standards came out in January 2008. The difference between a 1998 neck and a 2006 neck would be the rolled fingerboard edges.
