I wouldn't sell it, i would hang on to it, you may get a lot more for it in a few years.

rsj450 - Fender wound up using that bridge on these guitars for about a year or so; that's a Kahler 2500 series. They used it once they stopped using the Schaller-made Fender System 1 trem units - but they still used the Schaller string lock that is on your guitar. I believe this bridge was only used in 1987; in 1988 they went to the Kahler Spyder like the one shown by darkogav (but on the 1988/89s it wasn't recessed like his and they were clearly marked "Made in Japan").

darkogav - I would be willing to bet that your Strat doesn't have a "Made in USA" on the headstock and that it only has a contoured-style neck plate that says "Fender USA".

hmm.. wait a minute. i better check that. i though it had made in usa printed on headstock. but perhaps it just has Fender USA. will check later on tonight. why, what does it mean if it says just "Fender USA"?

There's a long thread here on the forum about some odd Strats with these specs that have no country of origin marked on them anywhere - the closest thing they have is that "Fender U.S.A." neck plate which was used on both USA and MIJ models. I was wondering if you had one of these "unmarked" ones or if your's was clearly marked "Made in USA" on the neck - just trying to build on the long thread.

Here's the link:

It just has a Fender logo and serial # E8*****. No where does is show country of make other than the tremolo. I assumed since it has no "made in japan" marking it was US.

Anyways, I read through the thread you posted and it was a very interesting read. Sounds like I might have a "Spyder Strat" as well. I always though that's just the way they made Strats back then. Has a screw in tremolo and it is a real pain in the $@! to change strings or lock it but the thing seems to be build military grade. Stays in tune very well.

Hello
it looks similar to mine, as far as I know it's a "Contemporary STANDARD 22", MIJ 84-87.
If you search in the forum or in the net you will find a lot of info.

See here for instance: http://freespace.virgin.net/john.blackman4/st22.htm

That Kahler is a 2520 traditional fulcrum tremolo, it looks like Fender used this model for a while at that time.

I have a 1986 Contemporary Strat with a Kahler trem unit. It never ceases to amaze me that there were so many different styles of trem units on these guitars. I don't think I've seen the exact same design twice. My Strat appears to have some mutation of the System I unit. I took the locking nut off of the headstock because it kept breaking strings. Still have it, though.

stratmansteve - that's definitely a System I trem on your Strat; she's still in good shape for an over 25-year-old Strat. They used the chrome version on this model and the black version on the "Contemporary" models that had the System I.

From what I've read the System I trems were made by Schaller although they do look a lot like the Kahler trems of the day. Schaller made another trem that was used first by Schecter (and marketed with Schecter's name on it); after Schecter went bankrupt that other trem showed up on early EBMM Silhouette guitars (without the "Schecter" name of course). However, both the Schecter and the EBMM models use that same string lock that Fender used with the System I.

It doesn't surprise me - floyd rose-type bridges were as much a part of 80s rock as big hair and bandanas. Every man and his dog seemed to have one, or want one, on his guitar. At the start of the 80s Floyd Rose was the only real option for big dives, then just about every manufacturer out there had a crack at doing a better job and the designs just kept on changing. Manufacturers like Fender (particularly in Japan, where 'rock' was really taking off) kept changing what they fitted to try to keep up with the next-best-thing. Hence: 80s guitars have a crazy array of vibrato bridges attached to them, some of which are great, many of which are pants.

Which makes me think - being a guitar tech in the 80s must have been fun! All those little hex bolts.... *shudder*
