I just purchased an American Deluxe Stratocaster a couple weeks ago. While playing at church this morning, I lost nearly all sound from my neck pickup when switch is in the 1st position. I get good volume from position 2 and I get good volume from position 1 when S1 is depressed.

This is my first Strat, so I'm not sure if the 2nd position or 1st position w/S1 down sounds like it's using the neck pickup or not by the sound. Any tips? I'm not afraid of opening things up. If I end up having to have it serviced under warranty, do I need to do anything special besides take it to an authorized shop?

Bring your sales receipt.

You can't fix the switching system. Take it back. I'd never use that system. Too prone to failure.

The S1 switch groups different pickups with the neck pickup. (if I remember correctly, pos5 with S1 switch engaged groups all three pickups together, while with the S1 switch disengaged, pos 5 uses the neck pickup only.)

Position 1 (neck pickup) would be position 5 correctly but that doesn't matter.

S1 disengaged:
No sound with pos 5 (neck pickup only) = switch problem or pickup wiring problem.
Pos 4 connects neck and middle. If there's sound, it's from the middle pickup.
Is there a sound change when switching from pos 2 to pos 3? If not, it is as said above.

S1 switch engaged:

You hear the sound of the other pickups without the neck pickup (see your manual for switching diagram).

Remove pickguard and check wire connections. I assume a loose wire from the neckpickup, either ground connection on one of the pots or the connection to the 5 way switch.

Easy to correct, if you can solder. If not, cheaply done by a guitar tech.
If you take it to the store where you bought it, they'll do it for free (warranty!!).

I would not assume that the S1 switch has anything to do with it, since you get sound when engaged. In fact, I'd bet it's the wire connection from pickup to 5 way switch. Pos 5 simply has no contact.

The Super Switch on the S1 equipped guitars is prone to picking up more dirt and corrosion than the 5 way or 3 way switch. Usually a quick spray of contact cleaner will fix it. Get a can of it at any Walmart or automotive parts place.

I have an 8 year old Strat with the S1, no problems except the cleaning 2x a year.

+1

Likely a wonky connection somewhere within the neck pickup circuitry.

I've read a lot of bad press about the alleged frailty S-1 switching system (including from my own brother) but I've been playing two S-1 Strats professionally for six years now with absolutely no issues whatsoever. I can only presume that some of these switches may have been shoddily manufactured from the git.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I ended up taking it into the local Fender authorized shop. They said they are getting a lot guitars with N3 pickups in that have this issue. He had another one in earlier in the day. Apparently the winding keeps breaking on them. Has anyone else heard of this issue? It seems pretty troubling.

I should add, he made this statement without opening it up yet. So maybe that isn't actually the issue. But it's still sad to hear they are having issues with the N3s.

It happens every now and then, but it's seldomly.
He's just being lazy!

Have him open it and check the wires and solderpoints. In almost 30 years, no pickup died on me! I bet it's a wiring problem! If not, that's what warranty is for. If you like the guitar as is, have them swap the neck pickup, if really necessary.
