I've got one and that guitar has stood the test of time. It seems to me to be heavier than American Strats from the same year. I have used it many times, I replaced the original pick-ups with Lace Sensors in about 1990 and I have replaced the pickguard. Great guitar and I'll keep it for one of my kids to play.

...I have been doing some research online(many thanks to google) and i believe the switch in question is called a coil-cut switch or just a coil switch. I have some wiring diagrams and such, (not specifically for my guitar, but for those with similar pup and control config. If my conclusion about the switch is correct, switches between coils of the humbucker so that, when in the blended position on the 5-way switch, you can choose which of the two coils on the pup is combined with the middle pup. I will try to post basic wiring diagrams, and/or images of what i am talking about.

I acquired a 1984 Fender Japan strat from the other guitarist in my band. It has some issues. There was a crack in the headstock, but I'm working on that. It has a weird bridge that appears to be locking it is a Fender bridge will post pics soon

'Scuse me coming late to this thread. But the bridge in question rang a bell in my woolly mind: I presume we're talking about the thing pictured on this webpage, right?

That's Fender's answer to the Floyd Rose, which seemed to be having an unstoppable rise in the 80s. ’85 – ’86 they put that bridge on their short-lived Performer and Katana models, like the one in that gentleman’s pictures. Both instruments came out of Japan: I don’t know if the bridge found its way onto any more “normal” Fender models. Both the Katana and Performer failed, for a variety of reasons, and were quickly discontinued. Which of course makes them highly collectable now.

By the way, for anyone who doesn’t know it, that fella hasn’t cut the treble fin off his Katana, that’s the way that model was designed. Looks kinda groovy, to my kooky eye. And I’ve always hoped to see the Performer make a comeback – d’ya hear me, Fender?

Nope. At least, that's not what I am talking about, not sure about everyone else. I am referring to the "Fender System 1" from Kahler. At least I think that's what it's called. I have photos, but I haven't quite figured out BBcode yet, so some insight would be helpful. In the meantime, the Photos are on Facebook. URL to be provided later. [/code]

That bridge looks like the one on my '86 MIJ Strat. The best site I've found for info on Japanese Fenders is . . .

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.blackman4/trem.htm

Hope it helps.

I emailed consumer relations at consumerrelations@fender.com and got a pdf of a parts list and wiring diagram for my guitar. It's a Japanese Stratocaster, part number ST-556 HM/M and the switch in question is indeed a coil tap switch for the rear(bridge) humbucker pickup. still workin of facebook...
