I think that until recently I owned a Japanese Strat exactly like the one you describe including the bridge (which was Fender Japan issue). String tuning actually took place by turning the small knobs on the bridge. The nut was not actually a "roller" but a locking device which locked the strings down when you tightened it down (which pressed small metal bars down on the strings). It was a $@!&* to restring and set up, but when it was set up and tuned, it never went out of tune - and I mean never! You could bend, or use the tremolo to extreems and it didn't get out of tune. Not the nicest Strat I've ever owned, but a hell of a lot nicer than the piece of crap Strats made in the US in 1983 and 1984. The finish was spectacular and stayed that way for the twenty years I owned it.

I just bought a guitar almost exactly like yours, based on your description. The "Floyd Rose" style tremolo is actually of the brand "Kahler" (mistakenly called Kohler by some) but it is Floyd Rose licensed. I don't have much info on the guitar. (Does anybody know where to find the model/part number?) It's in pretty crappy condition, but for $40, it's a good winter fixerupper project. One major question about controls: there appears to be a small 2-way or 3-way toggle switch positioned between and below the back two knobs. (by back two, i mean the two closest to the cord jack) The toggle switch, if that's what it is, is broken, and i have no idea what it does. Any suggestions and/or answers and/or ideas/clues would be appreciated. Please email me at clayw09@yahoo.com

mine doesn't have that switch but my best guess is some phase switch or something I don't know.Oh btw thanks for the info on the bridge.
