Newbie here! I have a Deluxe Lone Star strat and have been thinking of craigslisting it and ordering an American Special. Mine has 2 Texas Special single coils and a SD Pearly Gates and the Special has 3 Texas Specials. I also like the looks of the maple fretboard and 70s headstock better but that is just cosmetic.

Otherwise, what upgrades am I getting in the American Special? Is it worth it?

Are you getting a better guitar? Not really, I've found the American Specials to be the lowest production quality out of Fender's USA facilities. Fretwork isn't that great, no tinting to the neck. Electronics-wise, you're about the same. The nut is a single MM wider on the Am Sp, but that's really tough to feel. But the Deluxe MIM series has the best fretwork I've seen below the American Deluxe series and the guitar is just as good as my American Standard.

You'll have two things with the American Special you wouldn't have with the Lonestar.... A waterslide decal that reads, "Made in USA" and a slightly longer fretboard with an extra fret. Is it worth it? Not really.

I think it depends on what level player you are.
The Highway 1s and now the American Specials are the working mechanics dream.
If you can dress and polish your own frets (I can)
And change out your hardware and electronics (I can)
The wood is better the electronics and components are better I say sell and be the man.
Step up a wrench that strat into perfection.

I can too, but, do I know what the hell I am doing and is it quality work? That could be up for debate.

The Electronics are the same. Pickups are not. The pots, caps and wire have been identical, except for the added cloth cover on the wire, since 2000. Seems like you been left out of the loop for a bit.

Pretty much. For example, the bridge on the Am Spcl is the same as a MIM Strat, not horrible but the saddles are much better on the Am Std than the Am Spcl. No case with the Spcl either.

Actually, in the case of the MIM Lone Star and Roadhouse Deluxe Strats... the pups are the same as an American Special... US made Texas Specials (w/ the Lone Star having a US SD Pearly Gates Plus.)

Sounds like there is really no point in "upgrading." I really want a Strat w/ a maple neck and 70s head tho... I guess I will wait until I can justify the cash on a Standard. I am also really digging the brand new MIM Pawn Shop Deluxe 70s Strat. Will have to check it out too!

All stock 6 screw bridges suck you ask me, I replace them.
Blade Runner is the way to go
I like to knock out the nut and put in a graph tech to.
I think Seymour Duncans are a waste of Money and you should get dimarzios
But you know what they say bout opions and thats just mine.
Grease Bucket circuit Big Peghead with a Dimarzio Evolution and Blade Runner.
Sustain Machine!

Donny, your OK man. It all comes down to what kind of music you play and like. If Metal and punk then humbuckers are the way. Old Rock n' Roll - Single coil. Blues - either one will do fine.

I just like the modern sound of a Strat followed by the classic tones from days gone bye. I like 2 point and 6 point trems, MIM's and MIA's are the best. Of course I still have an LP just in case I need it.

You know I started out thinkin there is no difference Im guttin stuff so Mexicans and Koreans are fine.
Your ok with that untill you get a American Standard a Highway one or American Deluxe in your hand.
When you let go of your favorite Epiphone and get a Gibson you know the deal.
I actually been playing over 35 years.
In my lifetime I have been through more strats than I wanna count here and now.
I play Rock n Roll like Aerosmith Kiss Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin.
I litterly spent my life savings trying just about every combo of pickups pedals racks and amps.
But it boils down to my passionate views and it will never be the same to anyone else.

I take the 6 screw bridges off they are junk but I like the 6 screw attatching style its the best for a blade runner set up.
So I like the way its set up. I love highway ones and specials I like the big peghead for sustain the body has a better route
a true singls single humbucker, overall its better cuts.
I hate the curl saddles on the new Standards I liked the older 2 point bridges
Also the pickups are not what I would go with on the new standards I also like the Fender Pro cases better so I buy a case too

I'd go for an American Standard. The American Specials are nice, but I feel that the American Standard is the better value...especially now that they come with Fat 50's!
