Hi all

I have an opportunity to pick up an '82 American Stratocaster for $750.00. Being a bass player I was wondering if this is a good price/average price or am I getting the short end of the stick.
It also has a Roland synth thing added to it(near the bridge). Color is metalic brown.

Any thoughts on this price?

Thanks,

JB Jo

If its the real deal, it should be a good price. If I'm not mistaken, it should resemble a 70's Strat...

A few 1982s were the large headstock style like a late 70s Strat, but most of the 1982 production were the so-called "Smith Strats" with the smaller headstock/4-bolt neck attachment.

Some photos would be helpful.

I have a headstock pic...See if I can do this right: Image

So it has a maple neck and the bridge pup is black and the neck and middle pup white. Not sure if all original. Seller does not know much about guitars in general and like I said I am primarily a bass player (7 Fender Jazz basses) but just do not know enough about their 6 stringers. Oh and the color is described as "Sahara Taupe". Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

*EDIT* Someone just mentioned to me that this guitar is a "Dan Smith Strat". Not sure what that means...any thoughts?

I was going to say the headstock photo is a bit distorted but it does look like a 1982 Strat. These 1982s are sometimes referred to as "Smith Strats" or "Dan Smith Strats" - Dan was a designer/program manager at Fender in the 1980s; he was responsible for several changes to the Strat for 1982 - they went down to this smaller headstock size but continued to use the large black headstock decals (note that the headstock shape is not vintage correct but somewhat curvier than a pre-CBS Strat headstock). He returned the neck attachment to a vintage-style 4 bolt from the 1971-1981 3-bolt/micro-tilt attachment; as part of that the truss rod adjustment moved back to the heel of the neck from the headstock. These also tend to be more contoured - by 1979/80 the Strat bodies were not as contoured as they had been in the past. These also have a slightly hotter bridge pickup.

Sounds like this is a good deal for the money assuming it's all original even though it has the Roland pickup attached.

Hey thanks John. Great info. I am leaning toward buying it. Another friend told me that guitar could sell for $1,500.00 + because of the year and place it was built. I am not sure about that but if it feels right I will most likely grab it.
