I have been on the lookout for a nice original Antigua Strat. I saw this one on ebay and everything the guy is saying in the video does seems to check out via codes and pics. But there is something bothering me about the body. Most 70's early 80's strats that I seen have the sticker in the pup cavity not the neck. Also it is something about the color, it looks too good and almost like the Mexican reissues no? I am not worried about it being a mutt, but I am worried about it been fake. But the color is way better than on anything else I can find. The owner has been super upfront and has a good sales record but I am concerned someone sold it to him without him knowing:

Thanks in advance

I'd actually be a little fearful with it. There seems to be some finished removed on the back of the headstock in the same location the Made In Mexico decal would be....

Thanks I didn't even notice that... If you look at older ones, the color just doesn't look to have aged the same as say a 79-80

Looks perfect and yes, sometimes some guitars Fender made are a bit out of the range.

All the best,
Robin

Hmm - also the serial number sticker in the body doesn't match up with the neck - the one in the body is an "S9xxxxx" as you would expect for a big headstock Strat (since they used those from 1979 on into early 1982). On my '79 Lead II the stickers in the neck pocket match the serial number on the neck.

The stickers don't look fake, so I'm wondering if someone sent it back to Fender in 1984 for a warranty neck replacement and they either built or turned up this one from a parts bin. This may be about the first time I've seen a big headstock Fender Strat neck with an "E2xxxxx" serial number on it; ususally those numbers are found on the "Smith Strats".

Thanks everyone for the help

According to the owner the strat was built in 84 using misc left parts as the factory wound down. The body is an 79-80, neck an 82 (the codes check out that is why they are different) Electronics are 80 81 so it is a mutt of parts they had laying around and put together in 84 as operations wound down.

One thought is why would anyone go to that much effort to fake a guitar that is not worth all the much? Again I don't think the owner is up to anything he has been more than open about every question...

The body has held its color really well again I don't mind the mutt parts status as long as the body is real.
