Well for some reason I can't log in with the user name I had some years back, but anyway.
I have a question for you guy, last time I was in the forums I had a Gibson Traditional Pro, Fender Strat MiM Deluxe, Vintage Modern 100w Marshall and a Breedlove acoustic. To make the story short, divorce forced me to sell 98% of my gear which I regreted it all along. But today I now own a Marshall Jubilee Combo 2558 amp, a Fender Deluxe 90 Amp, Seagull Original Acoustic and a Gibson Traditional.
Now for the question, my son has been surrounded by guitars and music for all of his life. So now he wanted to play as well, I told his mother (which we're separated) to buy him the guitar and I'd buy the amp. She ended up getting him a Starcaster (that wasn't what I told her to get) but anyway.

Question:
Is it worth upgrading the guitar with better pups, electronics and neck with an american strat with rosewood fretboard? Mind you he's 10 yo but making some serious progress to the point that we went to our local GC and he started playing some Godfather theme song and attracted attention.

I'd upgrade his current guitar with nice pickups, pots, tuners, and possibly bridge. At that age, he probably still wouldn't take as good care of the guitar as he would when he's older. In a few years, and he still is highly interested in the guitar, upgrade to a MIA. He'll appreciate it more then and will take better care of it.

Hi Stevie Ray Vaughan77,

I wouldn't bother trying to upgrade the Starcaster, but would suggest a nice MIM Standard if budget is a concern. At about half the price of an Am Std, the MIM Std is a fine guitar that will serve a beginner quite well for many years, even up to professional level, and is leaps and bounds above a Starcaster. But if you can afford it, an Am Std would be even better, quite nice. If you go the MIM Std route, you might also want to get a Blues Junior amp, and both together would cost about the same as an Am Std guitar alone. The MIM Std and BJr would be a great pair for a 10-year-old, and for years to come.

One more thing.....moding the guitar that your ex bought him will go over a lot better than replacing it. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about here.
