There's no way to tell you or teach you via a forum.

I suggest, you search YouTube tutorial videos and learn the blues scales in all keys.

Are you a pure beginner or just a beginner regarding blues??

Actually, it doesn't matter, which music style you choose to begin with, it's all the same start: learn the chords, learn the scales, train your fingers and don't forget to learn about your guitar!!
To know how the stuff works is as important as learning how to use it.

If you're a beginner, learn the basics, it all starts from there. Open chords, Maj and Min, 7ths, Pentatonic scale, and when you're fingers are ready, 12 bar chords in all the keys, so you get to know the fretboard, and where these are repeated. And there's more...

As said, it can't be taught by forum. Find a good online course or teacher. Justinuitar.com. is excellent IMO.

That's if you can handle Marty spamming your inbox til you sign up, or buy something before his unreal 24-hour sale ends - complete with countdown timer and follow up spam...

I do like his vids tho. If there's a song you'd like to learn, he does that well. His selling methods put me off.

Marty Schwartz is not a good teacher in my book. If you like to play the blues you have to live it
Kidding aside, just look around on YouTube what you like there are millions of good tutorials and backing tracks for blues. Search for "guitar - blues - how - to"
Welcome to the next bluesman 8)

All the best,
Robin

It's all very personnal, but this is what I would do:

Learn 12 bar blues
Learn the pentetonic and blues scales in the major and minor keys.
Last and most important get some recordings of the artists (and the people that influenced them) you really respect and want to sound like.

I'm a big fan of all the greats and I would start with them: the three Kings (Albert, Freddy and B.B.), Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf's guitarist). I would also listen to other folks who aren't guitar players, i.e. Sonny Boy Williams. Listen to horns players too.

I hope this helps.

Richard Daniel's "blues guitar inside and out" was a pretty good intro.

I hate to push you to pay sites, but Jamplay.com has a few "blues" courses, and numerous beginner level series with videos, tab, backing tracks, user forums, and periodic "live" cam sessions with the instructors. Cost is $20 per month, on a month by month basis. A little cheaper if you sign up for several months to a year ahead of time.

Best solution is still to get with a teacher. A good teacher will be able to spot your strengths and weaknesses, and play to them both. THey also have reasonable expectations of your rate of progress, and can set you up with a practice regimen that will get you there far more efficiently than anything you can figure out yourself, or find online.

If you've never played guitar before, you need to learn the first position E, A, C, G, and D chord forms, the how to make bar chords based off of these (especially E,A, and D). From there, move on to the structure of the 12-bar blues. Mixed with that, learn your major, minor, and blues pentatonic scales. Don't just memorize patterns, but know the name of each note, and think about how the chords of the 12-bar blues correspond to these pentatonic patterns. (Oh yeah... learn basic chord theory and know which not is which in your chords... when your ready to start soloing, this helps you know how to keep the feeling of the chord you are soloing over).

Listen to lots of blues recordings. Go back to the roots, and listen to Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Lightning Hopkins, and such. All of the great modern blues guitarists start by studying the "old masters". From there, try to work with backing tracks. You will find tons of backing tracks, some with suggested scale patterns to play, all over the internet. I personally like the Jamtrax series, which will play a progression (rhythm guitar, bass, and drums) for you to solo over. Suggested scale patterns are also provided in the book.First, play the chord progression for the backing track. Once you have that memorized, try to solo over it. It will take a lot of time.

once you have your basic chops down, see if you can dissect the music of your favorite artists. Also, start digging deeper into music theory so you have a better understanding of what you're doing.

It's a long process and takes a lot of work, but you will be rewarded.

It also can't hurt to get a dog, a woman and a truck, and never be able to hold on to any of them for long, when you're walkin down the street...

Wouldn't that be for country?

Marty is very good but I'd start off with Justinguitars basic course and blues course to get a good introduction and then use Marty to augment and flesh out your knowledge, along with others that connect with you. There's enough free material from both Justin and Marty to get you well on your way and to see who's teaching style works best for you.

Actually I was kind of thinkin' the same thing...except for the truck. Gotta agree with hatcher there...the truck puts it into the realm of country and not blues.

I'd say, find a woman...p_ss her off to the point that she leaves you...then get a good bottle of cheap bourbon and sit down with your Strat to work it out. If you can get yourself fired from your job, that will help too. Keep the dog though...they make wonderful drinking companions! That said, avoid a Golden Retriever...it's just impossible to be depressed enough to play good blues around a Golden Retriever! LOL!!!

Look up Steviesnacks.com. Anthony over there is focused solely on blues. In particular Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King blues... Can't go wrong there. He has a couple three part series on youtube (all free) that teaches you three levels of solos for two or three different styles (shuffle, slow, etc). That's how I got my start four years ago and now I'm the lead guitarist in a local blues band!

I'd like to add listen to the first couple of Stones and Led Zepplin albums. While the techniquie is advanced, those are some great examples of putting blues into a "modern" context.

Now where is my Little Red Rooster........

-H

ps: Got the truck, dog died a few years ago, wife refuses to leave, feels like the blues to me...
