I found a MIM strat (has serial # starting with MXXXXX on neck) but has a Corona metal back plate on back of neck/body. Does anyone know if this a custom job or did these strats ship like that from Mexico circa 96/97?[1]

[1] Not quite sure what series or line of strat it is.

I'm not sure about the Corona metal back plate but here is some info on serial numbers from "The Stratocaster Guitar Book", pg. 151.

Mexico number series / Approximate years
    MN5 + 5/6 digits  1995-96
    MN6 + 5/6 digits  1996-97
    MN7 + 5/6 digits  1997-98
    MX10 + 7 digits  2010

HTH

Cheers!

Since MiMs are made in Mexico, they don't have a Corona Neckplate. Corona is in USA.

A neckplate can easily be exchanged! Wouldn't call it "custom job", though, everybody who's able to handle a screwdriver can do it in 5 minutes.

Your neckplate must have gotten exchanged by the previous owner.

Swapping neck plates is nearly as common as swapping pickguards.

And there are thousands of neck plates (both genuine Fender and custom-made) listed on Ebay on any given day.

From '93-'98 alot of MIA parts were shipped to the plant in Mexico for assembly.

Did a Corona plate make it through inspection? Maybe, but doubtful.

Is it a "Black Label Strat"? Those were made from '93-'98 offered in a "Traditional Series" and "Squier Series". Tele's and P-Basses too.

Well, I tried a MIM Black Paisley Strat and a MIA 2012 American Special on the weekend. Both sucked equally when compared to a MIA Deluxe Strat. Here is to hoping the 2013 Am Specials are better.*

* I suspect there is a chance also that the reason these didn't sell and are still in stores is that they were the worst of the lot that the store got and everyone who bought one bought the better sounding and better setup ones, so that's why they are still for sale -- just a guess.
