Hi,

I recently acquired a 'black label' mexican Fender 'Squier Series' (at edge of headstock), # MN 552667.

Can anyone from team Fender or otherwise tell me more about the specs on the bridge pickup? I'd like to swap out the N3s on my deluxe (sad to say they sound absolutely lifeless compared to the black label, especially the bridge) and wanted to get something with more oomph and clarity.

The N3s just sound like a wet towel, no power and really thin. By contrast, I'm blown away by the power and overall well balanced tone of the bridge on the black label mexican.

What kind of pups fit that profile? Maybe there's another brand with similar characteristics?

Thanks much!
SOL

I did, came back saying they are backed up, will take a while.

Has anyone else noticed these black label pickups? I've read that they might have been wound hotter than usual?

You have a "Black Label" made in 1995.

I have one from '94. It came with ceramic magnet pickups and 500k mini pots. And actually the ceramic picups didn't sound that bad. Very Strat-like.

Your N3's and most other noiseless pickups probably won't have the clairity of those ceramic models, as you have found out.

Those ceramic's aren't really anything special as far as winding goes and if you have a multimeter you can test the DC resistance. They were probably machine wound and pretty consistent in windings. Not like early Fender stuff. But, anything is possible that you may have a "hot" one.

I still have the original pickups, but the guitar has had several different upgrades (pickups, tuners and electronics) over the years. The Black Labels are pretty good modding platforms because of quality versus price.

You can google "Fender Black Label Strat" and get quite a bit if info on them. Good luck.
