I'm still fairly new to guitar. I've had a fender strat for just over a year and have not changed the strings. I realize I should of changed them by now. My question is should I purchase them and just change them myself, or should I take it to a store and have them set it up for me? Thanks!

Hi Starter1 and welcome to the forum. :)

Although it is not required that a musician be a guitar tech or a luthier - most of us are not - changing strings is one of the things we need to know how to do for ourselves. It's not unlike knowing how to put gas in your car but not having to be a mechanic in order to drive it.

Changing strings is not difficult. If you tell us what kind of Strat you have - i.e. what type of tuners - we can give you specific advice. There are also lots of YTV on changing strings which may be of help.

Cheers!
BM

See the link below...the official word on how to care for your Stratocaster. The beginning covers string changing:

http://www.fender.com/support/articles/stratocaster-setup-guide/

It is not essential that you become able to to all the checks in the setup guide...but you should read through it and know what someone else would be doing for you.

If you are unsure please take you guitar in to a shop and ask them to show you how to do it the right way. Having the strings slip on the tuners is not what you need if you are not familiar with changing them.

Welcome.

Thank You! I read the info and watched a couple of videos. I also called the guitar store near me and they said to bring it in and they'd walk me through the set up the first time. Thanks for the advice!!

Do this...

Image

When you are done, tune the guitar UP to pitch, grab each string around the 8th fret, pull up on the strings until the neck and most of the body is off the bench. Kind of bounce it like a yoyo. Then retun the guitar UP to pitch... The strings should now be broken in and you shouldn't have to tune it much again. (unless you are heavy on the tremolo)

I don't do it like that... on the wound strings, it can lead to tuning instability if you have the wrap overlap another string.

I always put one wind over, then the rest under, so the column of windings press against the others to help keep it from moving. Occasionally I will get a noise like a "tink" or "TING" when one of the winds move, but that's an audible signal for me that tuning has likely gone flat.

I hate it when someone loops strings through the peg twice. Please don't ever do that.

I have to concur with most of the thoughts here...it's not hard to change your own strings and it's in your best interest to learn how to do your own setups.

That said, I'd refer to the Stratocaster Setup Guide here on Fender.com, then look at a couple of Youtube vids then if that fails, have someone KNOWLEDGEABLE show you how (remember, that any yutz with a screwdriver can call themselves a "guitar tech"...doesn't mean they know a danged thing about what they're doing).

Good luck!
Jim
