Hi there guys,
I'm a proud owner of a 2001 MIM Fender Stratocaster, which has some little problems with electronics though. First of all, when the 5 position pickup switch is used, it produces hiss/rustle noise, as well as the volume/tone pots :? .

Another huge problem my Strat is affected with is that when I'm using the bridge pickup and I switch to the neck pickup, the volume falls and the guitar starts crackling...after some TERRIFYING seconds  , I must say, it seems like everything is working fine.

What can I do to fix these problems? Do I need to bring my guitar to anyone or can I fix it on my own? I would really appreciate if anyone could give some help!

Thank you very much and bye!! :D :D

Hi and welcome,

check the output jack at first (solder joints and cables).
If you can solder than check all the connections inside the guitar otherwise take it to a tech. Most probably a bad solder point.

All the best,
Robin

I'd try electronics cleaner first!
There's tiny holes in the casings of the pots and the contacts of the 5-way-switch are accessible anyway.
Give it a small shot and recycle switch and volume/tone controls several times. Repeat if necessary! That should take care of the noises when using switch and controls.

That "crackling" sound might be a loose ground connection, that's right! So checking solder points would be my action #2.

Action #3: If neck pu is still lower in volume, increase height of neck pickup! The closer to the strings, the louder the pickup will be. Adjust all pickups to balance volume output in all switch positions by raising or lowering the individual pickups. = no more decrease in volume when switching from bridge to neck pu.

IMO you have a problem with your 5 position switch only .

Switch need to be clean or replace .

By a good contact cleaner with lubricant , spray on the switch directly from the pickgard could probably do the job. Move switch at least ten time to remove dirt.

if you see switch is better but not perfect , you probably need to unscrew pickgard. Pull up just little bit to see the switch 's contacts an spray directly on contacts. Don't need to remove pickgard . May be just loosen strings.

I don't know what is the quality of the MIM switch. After 10 year , need a new one ?

Like the man said, spray some Servisol contact cleaner in the switch and into any crackly pots. Rattle the switch and turn the pots a good few times to shift any debris. You'll be surprised how long you can avoid having to buy replacement electronic parts is you just clean the crap out of them once in a while.

Thanks a lot guys, tomorrow morning (night time here in Italy :) ) I'll try to clean those contacts! I agree with stratele's opinion: I think all these electronics problems are due to the switch. I'll let you know in which way I fix it.

Bye!!! :D :D

Problem SOLVED! :D :D
This morning I poured some drops of ethyl alcohol through the casings of the pickup switch and the pots and then moved them frantically for some time...now all those noises are gone!

Thanks again and see you soon!! :D

Good , but to finish the job and keep your contact in good shape long time , better to lubricate them with contact cleaner with lubrication.

Only alcool is dry , contact need a lubricant . That 's what I write January 27
