The 8-ply pickguard suggests a MIJ '57 reissue.

This guitar is very Clapton-ish! :)

The neck, Tuners, Pickup's pots all look original, Pickup covers look new vintage off whites i think knobs too maybe?? Body looks right too, Could be a body swap but really why would anyone bother? Looks like a pearler, the string trees tell me its a late 80's as i have the same guitar in 85 with the steel trees. And the fully loaded MIJ pickguard is setting right here next to me to compare, I put 50's in it and its one of the best strats i've ever played...

Looking again, there are some differences from my old MIJ Squier, mine had no skunk stripe and the switch was a proper lever switch, not those horrible cheapo ones in the pics (sorry OP!)

I routed mine out for a humbucker and the wood was very light in colour, I assumed it was basswood but yeah, could have been poplar. Did Fender Japan ever use poplar? Whatever it was, it was really lightweight and pretty good acoustically.

i can't believe nobody has brought this up.

You take the neck off and adjust via a large screw in the neck at the bottom. That's how mine is. Mine has no top plug either, never did - doesn't mean it's a parts-caster. I've seen other MIJs like this.

It does make adjustments a bit of a pain, as you don't know how much its been adjusted til you get the neck back on and retune. My store had to have a couple of goes at it. Even so, I should have left it where it is, it was set up very nicely to begin with.

WOW, never seen one like this, i can guess how much of a pain it would be trying to setup the neck.

That's the way they were in the 50's and most of the 60's. And they still have models like that.

But yeah, they are a pain when you need to adjust lol.

I still have the loaded body of my 1985 strat like yours, but I put a 54 MIJ neck on it. I would take the it apart to compare, but it would be a pain. Next time I change strings I'll take a look though.

I have seen a few pick guards that have a small cut-away that would give you a little more access to this screw.

When they're set right for you to begin with, you don't have too...

My guy isn't going to be pleased when I walk in next week to get mine adjusted back.

I would tend to agree with the general consensus...looks like a mid 80's MIJ E series to me. The lack of stampage on the body doesn't surprise me...I have an '85 and an '87 (both Squier E series). The '85 is stamped, the '87 isn't. Yea, it should generally have "Made in Japan" on the headstock. Either yours was made without...which is possible, but more likely someone at one time just removed it and touched up the lacquer. Too hard to tell for sure from the pics. The gotoh tuners do surprise me a little...most of the E series I've seen have tuners stamped "Fender Japan"...but it someone was funny about the MIJ on the headstock, they may have changed the tuners as well.

Like Retro said there, not worried about the body wood...that's too redish to be Poplar...poplar's usually really white or has the greenish tint mentioned.

Now that all said, the one thing I would check (that again can't tell from pics) is the bridge spacing. It -should- be vintage...if it is, yea, I said it's a mid 80's E series where someone simply have a beef with the....errr...."origin". If that bridge is metric spacing however, she might be a mutt...with that neck, if it's metric, the feel will be off...but a ruler's always best :-)

Hope this helps,
Jim

I have owned several of these. This one, by the stamp on the neck indicated it is based on a 57 style Strat using the more modern string tree and Gotoh tuners, but retaining the 1 ply guard and 57 bridge (and most likely a 57 v shaped neck). Anyhow the pickups and the tone pots are era correct. In the 80s Fender Japan used the bigger pot and the YM-50 is a standard MIJ Fender 5 way switch (I have a whole can of these.) Not usual to see the cream colored covers and knobs either. Nice guitar and well worth $350+ Great quality and not that hear to set to if you know what your doing.
