Good to hear from the Fender Bullet lovers out there.

American Deluxe Strats made in 2012 shipped with Fender USA, Nickel Plated Steel, Gauges: (.009, .011, .016, .024w, .032, .042). Going with what's presently on the Fender website, it seems that Super Bullets are now back in vogue. Not all model specs provide information on string type, but here is what's listed for the following Strats.

American Special Stratocaster® Fender® USA Super Bullets® 3250L, NPS, (.009-.042 Gauges)

Cheers!

Last year I bought a 2012 American Special, and it did not have Bullets.

LOL! Indeed, it wasn't my intention to try as many sets but somehow things got a little out of hand so I figured I may as well go the distance. In the end I wound up back where I started. There were some good sets, notably the Dean Markley Vintage Reissue Nickel Plated Round Core Strings, but there was nothing to take me away from my beloved Original Bullets.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Cheers!

Indeed, the reaffirmation that your favorite strings are the way to go will have been worth the experience. :!:

The experience was fun and I think worthwhile, however in all honesty I must say that the end result may have been different with a totally objective testing procedure.

Ideally I would not know which set of strings is on the guitar and this requires someone else to change them. For a true double-blind test scenario I believe that yet another person is required to remove the strings from their original packaging so that the one stringing the instrument wouldn't know - or at least not know for sure perhaps - which strings are being used. Then the order would also be determined by random draw.

In spite of the inherent bias, the test did show my preference for nickel strings. What it didn't tell me and what I still don't understand is the difference between Nickel Wound, Nickel Plated, and Pure Nickel.

Cheers!

GHS Boomer 11s...
been using them for a dozen years or so. Never had an issue. I have five springs on the trem so that keeps things in line.
Favorite strings.

I have to say, I've never tried Fenders strings....

Yo BM,

While we all have to agree yours was not a scientific investigation, I really appreciate your feedback on those strings. I usually do the "do I like these better than the previous?" comparison, but I never had it in me to do such a survey as yours. While I too seem to like the punch and other tonals of the Fender pure nickels, if I decide to stray I can look back at your list and other comments for some suggestions.

As for those setup questions, I made the measurements after going from 10s to 11s, but after adjusting the springs to get the bridge in the right spot (1/8" float), I found the relief/action/intonation to be good to go. But on the next jump to 12s, if I go there, I'll need to bring out the tools.

Cheers.

Thanks, HeyJoe42! Glad to share the experience.

As for the "next jump" to 12s you mentioned, if you do decide to go there then you'll have to find an alternative to the Fender Original Bullets. As far as I know, they only go to 11.

Cheers!

Great review. I like the fact that you tried all on the same guitar, and so quickly to get a good comparison without much time between changing sets.

I have used and liked a lot of different types of strings, typically 10s, but lately I've been using Super Slinkys, 9-42, on my Blacktop Strat, and actually liked that they felt more like a set of 10s. The sound is rich and warm on the Blacktop (Callaham bridge block, locking tuners, five springs, decked bridge). I think that the type of guitar, the hardware, pups and setup make a difference as to which type of strings sound best on any particular guitar. I used the same strings on my new Am Std (Callaham bridge block, base plate on the bridge pup, locking tuners) and the sound is very bright and crisp. I think that one of my other "favorites", as far as 9s, are Fender 250L, nickel-plated.

You're absolutely right about how the type of guitar, pups, and setup affect the sound of a given set of strings. I wasn't too clear on this point in my original review post so an edit is in order. Thanks, shimmilou.

Cheers!

Is it safe to say that .010-.046 Gauges were used for the original '56/'65/'59 Strats or, if not, what were the original gauges (and string type if known)(. . .interested in the '62 as well, which I assume would be the same)?

Cheers!

As per my previous post- I finally had a pro tech setup on my new Strat and changed the Bullets to GHS Boomers upon recommendation. Different, but I liked them. IMO the G B E (first, second, third strings) blended tone better; but, I realize this may be subjective, and without scientific basis. I sense a slight tinnier tone (if that makes any sense), however, on the other hand, they appear more open sounding. My ears are old and the strings are new . . . maybe they will mellow with time. I wouldn't hesitate to use either the GHS's or the Bullets; but, I'll try others in the future. I know the GHS strings will be in my collection for the future and, now that my axe is adjusted for 10s, I'll try the Bullets again to see if they should be included.
