Based on my experience--as are all the opinions posted here--no matter how much science is behind those opinions & the experience, you still have to interpret it, and personal preferences will affect even that---many things affect the way a guitar sounds. When I've bought electric guitars I have gone and played them and listened to them.
I wasn't concerned over country of origin, type of wood, etc.
My primary concern has been how they felt to hold and to play them.
Especially the neck.

Those things are harder to change.

Playability is a different thing than how they felt to play--although they're related.

Playability can be altered with set-ups, and changing pickups and strings can affect the sound as well.

I don't look at what wood they're made from or where they're made when I check them out--but how they felt, then how they played, then how hey sounded.

I've played Squiers that I liked better that way than MIA Fenders, and I've played MIA Fenders I've liked better than Squiers.
Sam if you include MIJ and MIM Fenders, and for different countries of origin for Squiers.

But I have found that most parts of a guitar do affect the sound. But inlay, screws, pickguard material, and that sort of thing don't make a noticeable difference to me.

I've been looking at basses a lot lately--and I've been comparing them that way as well. And there are some cheaper basses that hold up well that way, some more expensive basses that don't and the opposite for both as well.

So as soon as I get a bit more money together and take care of some other things I plan on getting a bass. And this time is advance research. And fun.

But I will get a bass that is he best combination of how it feels to hold & play, how it sounds & price.

No matter where it was made or what wood(s) it was made with.

I own a MIM strat and it plays and sounds amazing! now with that said if i had the oppritunity to trade it for an american strat that was in equal or better condition i would just because they are alittle better built but then again they are the same materials that are being used in all the instruments. yea maybe the electronics are of lower quality than the american ones, just buy the pickups online or something. ive played squires that were amazing because their pots and pickups were upgraded to fender texas specials and that guitar played great! so TO ME it really doesnt matter cause i should be able to make it sound good with my pedals, amps, and hands. :)

Either way, you get a very good guitar for the money. For the MIA, you pay a premium for some better quality materials (HSC, pups, hardware, etc.) along with a higher cost for the labor to construct it. Regardless, though ... the MIM is still a quality instrument. I love my MIM Strat as it really plays sweetly and has nice fretwork on it. That being said, an MIA Strat is completely worth the extra money. I think it makes more sense to go MIM if you plan on modding it, though. Just my opinion...

I would say yes it does matter to me. I am not a national guy in that we are one global economy and have been for some time. What does seem to matter to me is the quality of parts and construction. I like my MIM strat but i can sure feel and hear a difference when i compare the MIM to the Strat Deluxe. I must go on record and say i purchased both of them used and to be honest have never bought a new guitar (of which i have quite a few).

I remember looking at a really beautiful Reverend guitar a couple months ago that really GASSED me out until i saw the "made in Korea" on the neck. At that point i thought that there was no way i was gonna drop $1400 on a MIK guitar. Not sure what made that run through my pea brain as i lived in Korea and know that Korea makes a lot of very fine high end things, and just as every other country a lot of crap too. In my heart i know that the guitars MIM or MIK will play great, and honestly my skill level would never surpass what they could do. But i love guitars and as i get older and have more expendable income it kinda makes me feel good to have beautiful guitars. Sorry i am kinda rambling here as thoughts of pro and con about Origin are short circuiting my brain.

In my heart i know it SHOULDN'T be all that important, but in my mind i know it surely does. Why? who the heck knows... there are plants in Korea using wood from China and hardware from Mexico and the USA to make a guitar to ship to the USA to sell to kids that will play the hell out of them. What could be wrong with that? But i would still buy the USA strat when i could. :?
