Did anyone try putting Gibson Les Paul/SG pickups in a Strat? How does it sound? Is it a good idea? Does anyone have a video of a strat with gibson buckers? I can't find any on Youtube. I'm thinking of buying a new guitar, and I can't decide between Gibson SG and Fender Stratocaster, so I thought of buying a Fender American Special Strat and putting Gibson humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions, and adding coil split pots. What do you guys think?

No matter what humbucker you put in a Strat it will not sound like a Gibson. Try YouTube there are Strats with Mr. Duncan's 59's and Seth Lovers. That's as close as your going to get.

You'll get close enough to fake it, but it's always sound like a really, really fat Strat.

It's a really good sound though - I have an HH Strat with covered Gibson 'buckers here, you'll get much closer to the 335 sort of thing than the Les Paul sound if you adjust your playing a little and back the tone off a smidge.

Don't forget to change to 500k pots and a suitable tone cap if you make the change. Really makes a difference if you're using pickups intended for a Gibson.

Scale length, tone woods are the major factors to consider between the two. Many like the Fender Blacktop for its HH design (H meaning humbucker and double H, meaning two humbuckers). But it doesn't sound like a Gibson by any means. Humbuckers can come close, but not exactly the same. With enough gain and adjustments of tone controls, its passable for a more aggressive tone.

Being a Fender Stratocaster Forum, this is best time to say, you can't go wrong with a Stratocaster forum, but we may be a little bias.

I agree with the others - plenty of Strat-types can be found with humbuckers, but they still aren't going to sound 100% like a Gibson due to the differences in construction.

I will address the one thing the others didn't - if you want to put a neck humbucker in an American Special you're going to have to route the body. I'm 99% sure that American Specials are routed for a neck single coil, middle single coil, and a bridge humbucker.

I could be wrong, but I thought there were also string spacing issues with the magnets of a PAF being a little off on a strat. :?:

Well, there is, but it really doesn't make that much difference to the sound in the real world.

I usually fit correct spaced humbuckers just so the strings are lined up over the poles so as not to trigger some kind of OCD cosmetic fury.

I have done this many times and it can sound close to a LP but the LP has a tone that is hard to reproduce due to its construction. (As pointed out by others) I do love a Strat with a hiumbucker in the neck. And also there is standard and F spaced humbuckers as well for different string layouts.

I was wondering when I would have the privilege of seeing a build as sweet as that once again.

The bridge spacing 498t works perfect sounds awesome and its the best high output humbucker made.
It sounds nothing like a Gibson in a strat though but it beats all Fender Humbuckers (like thats hard to do).
Covers need to be off of it.
It sounds better than a Seymour Duncan or Dimarzio also

Put Gibson pickups on a Stratocaster and next we'll have cats mating with dogs. I implore you not to corrupt the natural order.

LOL, not really. Overseas right now and then when I get home I stay for about 10 days and then head out again, this time to India. I have an nice Ultra neck on the bench and a body that will be on the way from Warmoth. Another build thread? Are people really all that interested in seeing another one?
