I have a 2006 American, the pole pieces are straight.
I see the 2012 American's pole pieces are beveled at the edge.
I know these are two different pickups.

My question is on my 2006 American are the pole pieces supposed to be flat edges or beveled edges?

Thanks.

I'd take flat over staggered any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I guess to answer the original question a little more in depth, instead of mentioning personal preference, the staggered poles were first creating when the radius of the Stratocaster/Telecaster was 7.25" to help with the output balance. Over the years, Fender has created several different heights of the poles as you'll see in many of their pickup models from the custom shop. With the newer 9.5" or 12" radius, that staggering becomes a bit of an opposite from the original purpose because it when you bend the high E string, it ends up over the pole of the B string. That is the lowest pole on the staggered set and makes the string sound quieter than other strings. Its a real problem to me. I never could figure it out until I thought about a Humbucker and the Les Paul. Flat pole humbucker pickups (yes it has adjustable poles, how often have you really seen any adjusted?) and a 12" radius. Hmm, I don't have an output volume issue bending strings on that style of guitar....

This thread is NOT referring to staggered pole pieces but to their edges being either edgy or rounded (each pole piece by its own)

You mean beveled edges... Just a bit of refinement that is purely aesthetic. Not much more to say... You either like it or don't care... I'm in the I don't care segment. If it sounds good, its good enough for me.

Yep, that's what I meant and I agree with what you're saying. I don't care either.

I just commented because some posters misunderstood and thought it's about staggered pole pieces.

Thanks, everyone I got my answer. The pole pieces are supposed to be flat edge on a 2006.
The reason I asked is my volume knob was put on upside down at the factory. (just the knob, the potentiometer was put in correctly) I saw the new 2012 and thought maybe they forget to bevel the edging of the pickups as well.

Nope, the newer pickups are custom shop designed, which were long overdue for an American Standard...
