I was always drawn to this site... Never really used much from them, but I love the ideas and the results...

Jim aside from silk screening, a lot of those types of graphics are printed out on Mylar sheets and just sort of sandwiched under the top coat. think the "Foto Flame" finish Fender used on some stuff a while back, to look like flamed maple.

...Didn't realize Fender had done it, but I never really looked at those that closely either. I do remember reading the words "Foto Flame" somewhere though... so I'll have to go back and look into that a bit.

Ah, Foto Flame tops. Well worth a Google - watch out for that Hamburglar...!

It may just be the Malibu Black talking at the moment, but we may be on to something with that...would be a lot easier than the screen printing for certain and probably easier than the water slide or transfer stuff mentioned earlier. Any idea how they might have "attached" it before shooting the clear? I'm thinking they must have used some kind of adhesive to keep it in place while the clear coat was shot...but then we're getting into that whole mixing of chemicals thing again....

Thanks,
Jim

I have no idea, Jim. I have never applied a graphic on anything bigger than a logo sized water slide. I would also assume there was some kind of adhesive (and some serious squeegying to get rid of air bubbles,) to keep it stationary.

Hm. Interesting.

I've never used Mylar nor been present to see it done. So I've just been doing a bit of reading about it - amongst others, this is a handy page to get started:

http://www.grafixplastics.com/mylar_what.asp

That'll lead you on elsewhere and soon you'll get an idea what's involved.

Gotta say, I don't think it's for a one-off job. You probably need to be set up for using this material regularly to make it worth the effort - though you're welcome to see it differently.

I suspect the waterslide paper is the way to go for a single project.

Or - without meaning in the slightest to be provokative - artists often find things like brushes and airbrushes are a nice way to do one-of-a-kind artwork...

Cheers - C

PS: I'm surprised nobody wants to pick up on my Hamburglar reference, if only so's they can show how knowledgeable they are... :D

Back in the 80's i had a artist friend paint me a few logo's on clear vinyl,
it's just like a decal you put on cars, no glue.
and if you ever want to change it or tired of it, just peal it off without damaging the finish.
about 10 years ago i removed them, and they were in great shape, the art work on the vinyl lasted a long time, maybe it was the paint they used, i still have them in my scrap book.

Ceri...thanks for the link to that stuff on the Mylar...already got it bookmarked.

Alas, between the problems with Dad (at this point this morn, I don't even know if he made it thru the night or not) and some problems here at home, I think the project I had in mind has been permanently shelved as it looks like I'm going to have to sell that particular guitar (it's already up on Craigslist). That said, I still may do a mini version of what I had in mind later this summer when I go to refinish that MIM Squier Series I picked up (which will NOT be going on Craigslist). For now at least, I'm still planning on refinishing in Graffiti Yellow, but I think I may add a little graphic down on the body before I shoot the clear. I did a test sample on transparency film this past week (since the existing finish is botched anyways) and it looks pretty cool... The colors are a bit off as I forgot to account for the shade difference between the yellow body and doing the initial test prints of the graphic on white paper (duh!!!) and transparency film itself is just WAY to heavy to work for the actual project in any case, but it gives me an idea of what it's going to look like.

Anyways, some useful information that has been logged for future reference no matter which way I end up going...again much thanks!

Jim

Jim, alongside that nothing else matters. Some of us have an idea what you're going through: you carry our thoughts and good wishes with you.

Best - C
