I am assuming it is a 95-96 MIM Strat
Can anyone tell me more?
Squier ?
Type of wood ?
the quality of electronics, etc. ?

thanks.

I don't believe it's a MIM as I have never seen them with the cheap tuners on the $100+ Squier's .
In addition the head decal doesn't match Font wise.

My guess is this is actually a Squier, the trem bridge is also the lesser Squier quality.
Measure the body thickness, if it's 1"5/8th than it's definitely a Squier body, but my guess is this is not a mim.

It's a real MIM but it was part of the squier series that came out of mexico about that time. Some said Squier Series on the end of the headstock and some didn't or people sanded them off.

They used the cheaper import parts on these guitars. I know some people on here have them and like them a lot. I had one once, but just bought it cause it was $75 and it came with a Fender red label hard case, so I kept the case and sold the guitar. I think I still have pics I can post if interested.

I assume MIM means "made in Mexico" ?

so what you are saying is that it looks like someone put a MIM neck on a Squier body ?

No, the guitar was made like that. It looks stock to me. It was just a cheaper model they made in Mexico.

I would say it's more between a Squier and a MIM Standard Strat.
Here's some pics of the one I had.

Be Careful upgrading the parts, these are often of their own particular dimensions and higher parts don't fit especially Trem Bridges....

yup looks very similar. cept yours has rosewood neck and mine has maple?
and yours says squier on it. and with an MN4 Id say its 1992-4

so as long as the body of this guitar isnt junk....Im ok. ?

I guess what Im saying is..... if i walked into guitar center and bought a brand new squier for 200-300 bucks.....Id be better off with this one ? baring any damage or defects. :D

yes...no ? haha

I think the neck is probably nicer than a new squier, Body is full size, so it's probably better. The used value is higher than a modern squier. I see people trying to sell these guitars all the time for like $300. Don't know what they actually sell for though. I sold mine for like $150.

$300 is about the price for a nice MIM so .... No .... I would not consider this guitar because it's not worth it. The amount you'd spend in upgrading is easily over $200+ But you still have basically a Squier .
If you are going to spend $300 on a Squier, than look at the Classic Squier series but this guitar is fine as a beater, but lipstick on a hog is still a Hog..

Now this may sound like I'm contradicting myself from my build threads in which I used a Squier, but in those I completely re-contoured the neck, redressed the frets, completely refinished the neck and bodies, redrilled and installed inserts for fine Stainless Steel neck screws. All this would cost about $1000 to have someone do this. If you can do all of these changes / repairs / rebuilds then that is an entirely different ball game ...

Other wise it's not cost effective to do what you are asking.

Yes, these are "real" Fenders...as others have said, it is a Fender Squier Series...just got one myself a few weeks back in trade for a set of Rototoms. In the one close up shot of the headstock there, you can see where it looks like someone just sanded the "Squier Series" off...a lot of folks did (that whole anal stigma about the Squier name). I don't know if it's true but there is a rumor and a lot of debate on these instruments actually using American bodies and necks as the Mexico Fender plant had supposedly had a fire back around that time. In any case, for mine I got an MIM standard big block bridge off Amazon for $15 plus shipping brand new and a set of GFS vintage Kluson style tuners (had them in the parts bin for another project but never used them)...everything pretty much fit like a glove...the vintage style tuners do a pretty good job of covering the wholes left by the cheapy covered tuners. Very sweet guitar now. Gonna refinish her in Graffiti Yellow sometime later in the spring or summer when my nerves are a bit less frayed.

Incidentally, I was rather surprised with the pups...yea, like the saddles and tuners, I'm sure they're the less expensive imports but mine really does have a rather sweet "Strat" sound to her...if ya get it, you may want to play around with those a little before you decide to swap them...I'm actually quite happy with mine.

Anyways, if you can snag it for between $100 and $150 ($200 tops), these guitars are -WELL- worth a few upgrades...very decent little instruments to say the least...just not worth a whole lot of money.

Peace,
Jim
