Some 25 years ago Fender really tried to push the envelope with a guitar called the Performer. Try an image search if you don't know it: to my eye it had a lot going for it, 'cept the naff headstock. And the few people who still own one claim they sound great. But it went down, as they say, like a lead zeppelin. It was withdrawn after a year or two, and a while later the Custom shop dreamed up the "relic" (with the help of Keef). The rest is history, in every sense.

I guess Fender got their fingers burnt with the Performer and have been playing safe ever since, always looking back at their heritage rather than trying to be the next thing. After all, if you want a futuristic Strat, there's always Ibanez...

I don't Fender is "playing it safe". I think they focus on what they do best and what the public demands. If no one wanted a strat or tele they would either have to redesign their instruments or get out of the business. Buying Charvel/Jackson was a big step in not playing it safe. It gave them another means to use for research and design.

I used to own an ash American Deluxe. Great guitar, nice tone. The S-1 was fun with the extra Fendery tones. Locking . But it wasn't right for me. Now I have the EJ which is basically a 57 RI with some mods and I love it. .

I have changed the SCN-s to Joe Barden S-Deluxe set. Now it sounds better, than any Strat of mine (I have six Am. Strats), except the Vintage ' 62.
Tis is my opinion

maybe it's because of just the great feel of something that seems vintage. Just holding a reissue of a 57 strat has such a sweet vibe .Maybe they do reissues because no one can afford origanals and everyone wants the sick vibe.
I think they dont use more modern shtuff because when fender came out with their desighns in the 50s and 60s they were so ahead of their time. my opinion
