Robert Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) died a few years before Leo Fender started building guitars.

Wikipedia to the rescue.

Nope. Leo was long after RJ's time.

Here´s a fantastic article about the first Fender acoustic guitars. It happened in 1962.

All the best,

hmmm. It seems that Robert Johnson did play an electric guitar for a bit near the end though. Who knew? There aren't any recordings though.

I think Leo Fender was just a small town radio repair guy while Robert Johnson was selling his soul to the devil.

Maybe Robert Johnson was starting to use what passed as an "electric" guitar before he died; people were starting to put pickups on acoustic archtops by 1931 or so.

However, at that point in time Leo Fender was either an accounting student at what is now Cal State Fullerton or had his first job after college working for an ice company while working on radios as more of a hobby in his spare time.

Leo didn't even start the radio repair company that would evolve into Fender as we know it until 1938 - the year of Robert Johnson's death. What I don't know is if Leo started the company prior to Johnson dying in August 1938.

Fender didn't start building guitars other than some one-off steels - those being the first prototypes of what became the Broadcaster/Esquire - until 1948, some 10 years after Johnson's death. Production of the Broadcaster/Esquire didn't start until 1950.

It would be an interesting subject to know what would Robert had played if Leo invented the Telecaster 15 years earlier...
