Personally i like a nice light piece of ash. I like the grain and it sounds much "Strattier" than alder. It is a nice contrast to my thick sounding, mahogany SG. It also cuts through a mix really nicely. What do you guys think?

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum.

The Ash vs. Alder discussion is an old time favorite around here. If you do a search and enter +ash +alder in the keywords field you will get several links. Here are some to get you started.

The great thing about ash is that it has a high calorific value giving out a lot of heat when you burn it. And contrary to the name - or because of it, I don't know - there is remarkably little ash left in the fireplace afterwards. It burns amazingly efficiently.

On the other hand, it's less than my favourite for smoking fish over. Alder is much better for that, and I like good ol' maple the best.

For these reasons I think it's good to have both in your guitar collection.

...I want to feel I'm adding to the discussion here, not just retreading old ground. :)

Cheers - C

+1 on "stratier" (or "woodier")

Same cutting through as alder! IMHO.

On second thought ........ I'd go for basswood .... ooops, no, that's for basses only ..... wait .....

......

.....

PLYWOOD!!!!!!! Because it feels so much stratier when plyed! I love to ply my Plywood guitar much more than I like to ply my alder one .... or was it elder one .....

Now I'm confused!

Smokin', do you think you might be confusing Straty with stratified? A mix up made by certain Far Eastern Strat fakers of the past, resulting in what we can only call... a Fender-bender.

See, that's an ash tree I'm introducing my Strat to, geddit?
