Hello,

I was looking at buying an American Deluxe Strat HSS RW and I wrote down the model number that was hanging off the tag that was attached to the headstock. This guitar was a sunset metallic colour.
Just now, I wanted to make sure that the model number was correct. The model number should have been 0119100-770 (a sunset metallic)... but the number on the tag told me it was a 3 tone sunburst (700)...
This guitar is from a reputable dealer and there shouldn't be any fakes at all...
Can any one help me with this? Is it real... fake... or has there just been a mixup in the tags...?
I'm so confused....

Thank you! :)

It's likely just a mix-up on the hang tag; it could have happened at the factory - I forget if the model number is handwritten or stamped, but either way it's easy to either write "700" instead of "770" or to set the stamp to "700" instead of "770". It could also be that the dealer took off the hang tag at some point and put the wrong one back on it.

EDIT: I would consider something like this on the hang tag to be something really minor. Usually I don't even look at the hang tag unless it's a custom guitar where the specs are listed on the tag (neck shape, pickups used, etc.). On a production guitar I usually just put the tags in a bag with the other case candy that I never use (like the short cable and strap that come with some USA Fenders) and I never think about the tags again unless I go to sell the guitar at a later date.

+1

I've seen that occur more than once on a new (and legitimate) Fender guitar at an authorized dealer.

Happens quite often.
Tags and case candy are kept in the case. When they sell a guitar, they sometimes simply grab one of the cases and then you got the wrong tags in there. Shouldn't happen but it does!

When I worked at a music store we had it happen once or twice where someone grabbed the wrong case (where we kept all the tags) for a guitar. When we realized it had been done, I came up with a short coding system for the tags. It told us what we paid for it, which case it came with, etc. When we sold one, we simply matched each both tags from the case and the guitar and never had it happen again. I think they still use the system.

I wouldn't worry that you have been taken or the guitar is a fake...just a simple mistake...to quote Forrest Gump..."It Happens".

Yep. When I got my latest brand new Am Std Strat, I noticed when I got home the tags and accessories were for a Tele (same case type). Returned to the store, and exchanged the case for one with a Strat accessory package, and again, after I got home, I noticed that the serial number was different on the tag from the guitar serial number. No big deal really.

I don't know if the guitar being looked at was new or used but I just wanted to pop an extra $.02 worth in here on the term "reputable dealer".

I won't speak to new instruments here but regarding used, NEVER assume that just because it's a reputable dealer or even Fender authorized, that the people working there have ANY clue what they are doing regarding the buying and selling of used instruments! About a year ago I walked into a Sam Ash Music and yes, they had a fake Strat sitting on the showroom floor. While the serial number indicated it was an early 00's MIM (and was priced to match), the lack of a truss rod insert and the two penny covered tuners and bridge were a dead give away. Yes, I did try to report it to the sales kid...who promptly got rude with me and swore up and down that it was real. I just walked away laughing my butt off.

More recently I picked up a nearly mint Lite Ash Tele from my local Guitar Center...got it for a staggering $179...even though these retailed for $599 in Musician's Friend back around the turn of the century. Why was it so cheap? Because the kid who took it in was sure it was a fake...he had never seen a stock Tele with Birdseye maple neck/fretboard, abalone dot inlays and Duncan pickups. Now even though this kid was SURE the guitar was a fake (it's not), he still took it in on trade and they still put it on the sales floor! Guitar Center...gotta love 'em.

Walczak's first rule of guitar buying - never assume ANYTHING. -Know- what you're looking at BEFORE you buy.

Peace,
Jim

Welcome to the world of Partscasters. As long as the body and neck are legit (there should be a bar code or other markings inside the body beneath the pickguard or on the neck pocket). People swap bodies and necks all the time... Its not all original, but doesn't mean its not genuine either...

While I do actually agree with that 100% (even stock Fenders are technically partscasters because short of a Custom Shop instrument, you're still dealing with a mass produced product where the neck and body could have been made weeks, months or in some cases years apart), I would simply add that quite often sales people are likely to be a bit reluctant about pulling the neck off a body just so a perspective customer can check the bar codes. With a personal sale, particularly thru something like Craigslist, I may insist on it (depending on the individual guitar of course) but many places such as Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Music Go Round and especially smaller shops...expect some resistance to the idea.

That said, again it's pretty easy to spot a fake Fender...at least a bad one. So again 'tis better to know what you're looking at ahead of time. I.e., if it says "Fender" on that headstock but there's no insert around the truss rod...no real point in having the sales person pull the neck off. And just because that insert is there, doesn't mean the body couldn't have been swapped, but again there's usually some pretty obvious clues to suggest the authenticity...i.e. if the bridge doesn't look correct for the specific make/model guitar or something looks like it's been plugged and redrilled, this should -always- be a red flag.

Peace,
Jim
