I believe that the Strat is so popular because it's the perfect blend of form and function. The body design is timeless and despite being almost 60 years old it still looks like it was designed for modern times. The design of the body also gives it a perfect balance both aesthetically and physically,it is so comfortable to play whether sitting or standing, the ergonomics of it are perfect.

The tonal range of the guitar is also broad in scope and that makes the guitar well suited for just about any genre of music which makes it probably the most versatile guitar on the market today. The playability of the guitar is also perfect and the size and scale of the neck suits just about anybody's hands no matter how big or small.Strats are also exceedingly sturdy and can stand up to the rigours of touring or constant gigging without getting easily damaged or even put out of tune. The beauty of the Strat is that they got it right the first time and even though there have been many changes over the years, the original design and layout are still very useful today.

Reference The Stratocaster Chronicles by Tom Wheeler, and The Fender Stratocaster by A.R. Duchossoir for background information on it's development. The guitar also won a 20th century design and engineering award. Try to source that one as well.

Hi burtorory.
I agree with the notion that the form, function, versatility and tonal quality of the Start are the most important aspects of its popularity. But do some research for your college essay on the marketing and social connections of the guitar. These also play significant roles in terms of popularity.

Take a look at when it became so popular and why. See “Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and, as Arjay so clearly articulated, “I knew I'd end up playing a Strat ever since seeing Buddy Holly play one on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957.”

The Stratocaster was not a slam-dunk out of the gate.

Easy question, easy answer: because strats are pure sex!

Lovely contours, lovely touch, lovely weight, lovely sound when playing with it, it can scream if you do it right, it never disagrees with you, it doesn't put up fights, it's always ready to please you in many different ...errr.... styles and it never asks for diamonds!

Any more questions??? 8)

I agree with everything previously said. Just to add one more thing; if you are a tinkerer a Strat is an easy guitar to disassemble, change parts and modify. Plus the aftermarket is full of Strat parts.

Not only can this be said about all guitars but its especially true about a stratocaster. No two are alike. they all have these minor nuiances that can make you love them or hate them and the fact that we can feel such strong emotion about an object is precisely the reason why they are wonderful. They can also be made into anything you want them to be from a precise clean sounding guitar to an overdriven tone monster.

When you hold your Strat close to your body and play it you can feel the vibrations and it just feels like your one and the same.

You people are the best!

I think the Strat actually becomes a spiritual connection between player and instrument, It becomes part of ones soul!!! :D

I had a little play on an ESP recently ( i can't remember the name of the model) it sounded great with the active EMG pickups, But....the connection just wasn't there at all, It felt flat, As if it was dead, It had no soul...I quickly put it down and went back to my beloved Strat! :)

I think all Strat players are passionate about their instrument, I'm most definately one of them!!

Dave Murray is one of my many guitar heroes and a well known Strat player!!

Keep the posts coming, I'm really enjoying sharing the "passion" :P

Respect to you all!!

It is just perfect and will last longer than all of us!
I think many designers today would make something so successful and lasting than the Stratocaster!

My ESP CS Strat is one of the most amazing guitars I've ever played. Absolutely phenomenal build quality. The most vintage rolled fast thin neck with the best fretwork I've ever played. It is in a completely different league from Fender CS, Charvel/Jackson CS, etc... I'm lucky to own it. I can pick it up and play it for hours without feeling the need to switch guitars. Most of my guitars are like that though. I sell the ones that aren't.
