so...ive been getting ready to upgrade to a nice american strat.my playing has finally reached a level that can justify the purchase.i found a few really nice guitars on craigslist and figured i could save a few bucks..i dont spend alot of time on the internet but i recently have been spending a bunch of time on this forum and some others learning about the different strat models fender has to offer.i was quite shocked at how many fake strats are out there.now im thinking i should just hold off and buy a brand new one when i can afford it.its pretty cool how some of you guys can spot a fake so easily..i know i couldnt.lol...now im not sure if i should bail on the two ive been intrested in.. :?

If you can photographically document the instrument(s) you may be interested in then post those pics here, we can likely steer you around the faux "shoals" to a safe Stratocaster haven.

It's a matter of experience.
You can buy new, which is the safest way.
If you buy online (used), post pictures here before buying, that might help!
If you have a friend who has knowledge about Strats, ask him to surf through the online offers with you.

To be honest: I would buy new if I were you. It's always better to play a guitar in the store before buying. You can play several and take the one you like best.

I would not buy used ones online without a decent level of experience, too much a risk.

They have been showing up for a few months now. Glad they finally caught some before they hit the market. This is from a local station here.

January 10, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- More than 50 counterfeit guitars were seized by officers at the mail facility at Chicago's O'Hare Airport in the months leading up to the 2012 holidays, Customs and Border Protection announced Thursday.

During the past few months, the agency said in its release, agents found both electric and acoustic counterfeit guitars purportedly manufactured by well-known brands such as Fender, Gibson, Martin and Taylor.

The guitars were single shipments coming to the United States from China, the agency says, and ranged in value from $300 to $700.

"Our message is for consumers to purchase merchandise from a reputable company," said William A. Ferrara, CBP Acting Director of Field Operations in Chicago. "Whether it is a counterfeit guitar or a shipment of unsafe Christmas lights, our CBP officers are combating counterfeits to make sure illegal and hazardous goods do not enter the U.S. marketplace or family homes."

The agency says the counterfeit guitars were found to be of substandard quality.

It's the same old story, if you are not familiar with a product, Genuine Strats in this case, then Craig's list is not such a good choice, having to go and look at a guitar at someone's meeting place without having ( at the very least ) seen photo's of it in the ad is not worth it..

Much better off to go to your local guitar shops and look at what is available used, often times there is a quite a selection and it's unlikely any of them will be fakes. It's however very likely that these used guitars have been modded, which is what Leo Fender's intention was from the beginning. A guitar ( Stratocaster or Telecaster ) that could be easily repaired by the musician, all it's parts being interchangeable and this led to today's customization.

Buying new is great too but there are many preowned with low mileage that deserve to be picked up and played ....
