Start learning chords, they are the be all. Once you've got the hang of chords, try to learn a song. Then when you feel confident enough, learn a solo. It takes a lot of time so be patient.

I suggest you start with burning guitars, it made Jimi Hendrix unforgettable!

Kidding aside: start with either beginner tutorials on YouTube, beginner books or best: get a guitar teacher.
They know exactly where and how to start.

The beginning is a mixture of theoretical knowledge (how does a guitar work) and practical practice (chords, single notes).

You have to be patient, you won't start with Jimi Hendrix songs right away. Usually it starts with shrumming chords.

Take a look at Gibson's Learn and Master Guitar: http://www.learnandmaster.com/main/pages/resources/

I looked at tons of the free stuff on the web, all the YouTube videos, etc. Then I purchased the L&M Guitar series and I'm glad I did. 20 DVD's that take you from absolute beginner to accomplished guitarist. It's an initial investment but so worth it.

And there is a very active student support forum where you can pose questions. Next best thing to a live instructor.

Good luck.

Ok...sorry...but I have to take issue with that. First and foremost, as with anything else, there are good teachers and there are -bad- teachers. Just because someone has the title "teacher" (or professional anything for that matter) doesn't mean they're any good at it AT ALL. And yes...I've had some very bad teachers in my life (both music and otherwise).

With that, I would also add that not everyone learns the same way...and a teacher needs to be able to acknowledge that. If the teach sits down with the student on Day 1 and just drops Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method in front of you...in my opinion, RUN!!! Seriously...you can only play "Little Brown Jug" and "When The Saints Go Marching In" just so many times before your head just implodes and that guitar get's locked in the closet for the next decade or so....

Here's my rational for those two statements. When I was very young, literally the ripe age of 4 years old, my parents bought me a 3/4 scale classical acoustic (an unclaimed repair from a local luthier...which I do actually still own) and sent me out for lessons. Teachers name was Roy Ramsey and for 3 years, I sat there with those stickin' books (back then it was Sam Fox and not Mel Bay...same thing though). And I finally quit. Even at that age, I wanted an electric guitar and I wanted to play -rock & roll-...the kind of stuff my older brother listened to (back then it was Beach Boys, The Shocking Blue, 4 Seasons, etc). The teacher (with my parents encouragement of course) was essentially trying to force me into learning reading and playing classical music. I was not ALLOWED to play the kind of music that I wanted. Looking back now, even being a young child, I'm surprised it took me so long to walk away.

Fast forward to my late teens. I was 17 years old, had my first job (bag boy) and realized that I didn't need Mom and Dad to buy me a guitar any more. So I went out and (blindly) bought my first electric....a brand new, but -ratty- Kay...essentially a neck and pickup slapped on a cheap slab of wood (later traded it for a decent bass...actually a '68 Kay P-bass clone). And I went back for lessons... This time, I was fortunate enough to get a guy named "Basil" (dude...if your still out there, I owe you!!!). First day this guy sat me down and asked me, "What kind of music do you want to play?". Wow! No one had ever asked me that before!!! I thought about it for a moment and at that time I was just starting to get into Clapton (as in listening, not playing). So for my second lesson, the guy brought in a 4 track tape he recorded of Clapton's "Cocaine", with the lead removed of course (pre-computer/internet/jam track days here) and he showed me a minor pentatonic scale....I've been playing ever since.

The moral here is that -if- you can find a teacher who's willing to work with you and your own tastes and preferences, yes...they can be invaluable, but the truth is that many, if not most music teachers treat their students as "assembly line" products.

Here's the thing...if a person's intent is to learn classical music (Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, etc) or even Jazz or something like Flamenco, then yes...sight reading and theory out the wazzoo are a must! If the intent however is rock music...say Hendrix...then feel and improvisation...being able to -JAM- is just FAR more important than being able to read (let alone read poorly such as you get with Mel Bay). Over the years I've worked with people who, quite literally if they don't have the song memorized, should you take the sheet music away from them, their hands stop moving...they simply can NOT play without that crutch. There is nothing of their own heart and soul in the music at all...goes in thru their eyes and out thru their hands. And it's BEYOND annoying. I actually worked with a drummer like this a few years back. She literally memorized or read every last beat of a given tune...you had to play each and every song -the exact same way EVERY time-. If you threw her any kind of curve or change up...maybe extended a lead or something, it threw her off completely (which in turn threw the band off) because she wasn't playing with the band, she was playing the written notes on the sheet and in her head. And if she didn't already have the tune memorized...or didn't have the drum sheet music available, her hands didn't move...at all. She layed the sticks down and sat behind the drum kit and watched. How the devil do you work with someone like that?? I can't...

Now that said, the guys I'm working with now...we quite literally have had 3 rehearsals to date...back in September some time....and we've been gigging ever since. We are, very literally, flying by the seat of our pants every night we're on stage! Heck...our front man will even toss in a tune every now and then that we've just NEVER done befoe...just got hit with The Eagles tune "Take it Easy" a few weeks back...on stage...never played it before (seriously...I personally had NEVER played that tune before!). Ya really gotta be light on your feet with these guys and you have to be on your A game, because dang...just about anything can happen on stage! LOL!!! And for those who's eyebrows just disappeared into their hairline...yes...we are gigging regularly. Have our 4th return show coming up week after next at The Century, playing a new bar out in Cleveland in February, we have 2 return engagements at Cowboy, 2 at The Patio and we're pretty much booked up thru March...even have a gig scheduled in July already.

So, assuming anyone (such as the OP) made it thru all that, here's my suggestion...sit down with your favorite music, via record, cd, mp3, Youtube, etc., and just try to play what you hear -first-. Don't worry if it don't sound exact or anything...that will come later. But start developing your ear right away...then if you get to a point that you just can't figure it out, THEN start referring to tab and online lessons and such (like Youtube) to help you thru. We all hit rough spots...I just had to sneak down to the basement a while back and watch a YT vid to work out the intro to Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl"...the rhythm is MORE than easy enough but that intro lead...just wasn't clicking in my head for some reason, LOL!

AS always, just my own personal opinions...please use them for what they're worth!
Jim

There's ways to find reviews about certain schools and their teachers.

If you don't like teachers at all or don't find one you like, there's still the other two options I suggested.

Or try to find musicians you like (local Bands) and let them show you something.

In either case, there's good and bad ones. Autodidactic learning works as well but chances are high that you learn mistakes and progress is slow.

to keep it simple, i would learn learn all the major and minor chords 1st,
then learn them in every position on the neck. once you have this done,
you will have a much easier time learning the scale modes for all these chords.
youtube has many good videos you should be watching,
it will shorten your learning curve massively, i wish i had youtube when i started playing.
takes a lot of the guess work out of your practice time.

I'd check out online courses. Justinguitar.com is all free and is an excellent course, well taught. Structured lessons and practice, songs for the level you're at to learn, and more.

You can supplement that by learning some favourite songs off YT. There are always beginner versions of Rock Classics, Hendrix etc that are simplified, as you get better you can get nearer the original - you'e not going to be able to do that in a few months.

A personal teacher is a big investment, there are advantages and disadvantages of starting out that way. Personally, I'd get the basics going first as there are plenty of online resources for that. Then choosing a teacher can be easier, as you have an idea of what you're struggling with and can find someone who can help. You'll also have a better idea of your preferred learning styles, and can find someone who can fit in with that.

...and the whole process of learning will take far longer, be more confusing and frustrating, and leads to many people giving up.

Besides, those guys have/had advanced skills, electronic bags of tricks, and used guitars with different tuning. Good luck trying to rattle off any number of Keef riffs in standard tuning. Good luck trying to follow Page on video, he was so sloppy at times even he didn't know where the hell his fingers were...

Playing and learning by eye and ear takes some knowledge and experience, it's the level many people aim to achieve when they first start. You can't do that without knowing chords, how they sound, and where notes on a fretboard are.

Learning guitar can be hard. Why make it harder? Many of those guys might have learned playing along to the radio. They didn't have a choice. We do.

I am a beginner here as well....found a GREAT teacher that plays blues and I could not be happier. Two lessons in I have already learned where all the notes are on the neck....He did it in a very simple way that was easy to understand and remember and already working on playing Keys to the Highway. Having fun learning and glad I took the plunge and started learning to play. It is something I have always wanted to do.

me too i still remember when i was 13 years old and wanted to learn to play guitar and my father took me to one music school , i can say it was the most boring part of my life , because i was learning just classic music , and with much theory , and after 3 years i saw that all my friends did start playing guitar in the same time like me , start to play really good songs from Eric Clapton , bob dylan ... even if they know almost nothing about music theory and they can not read one sheet , and me i still fighting with classic s sheets . then i did quit . and start to learn music alone . sometimes with ear and sometimes with scheet . and this did help me much . and right now i still notice that when i learn one song from sheet i play it without feeling as if i learn it with the ear . because with the sheet i feel i play like one machine but with the ear i play with much feeling . and my advice to you is to start to learn Chords and some easy songs it s so important . and you can learn scales after . and the most important is to listen differents music styles . good luck :)
