I have a 2011 Am Standard with a hard case. I have read that you can leave the trem bar on and close the case. I can't find a way. Needs to be removed to close the case. Correct??

Remove. You used to be able to not (I'm told), but not on the current cases.
I have a vague notion in says somewhere in the instructions, but I can't prove it...

I take'em off.
Even though it's not proven yet by anybody I know, I could emagine that a continous "dive bomb" position of the trem can't be very positive for neck tension and trem springs.

A neck with continously relieved string tension could develop a bow and the tension of the trem springs might be reduced if they're stretched all the time.

It probably takes years to develop those disadvantages but I simply don't take the risk.

Furthermore I don't like the deep dents left in the lid of the case and it might increase wear of the inlay of the case lid.

Since I don't use my trems anymore, I don't have to worry about it anyway, the trem arm is always removed now but that's the way I tought about it when I was still using them.

Even if you can close the case with the trem bar on, I'd highly suggest not doing it. If it gets hit on the side very hard, like in transit from shows or rehearsal, you could get a trem arm tip impression on the body, a trem post could shift, etc...

Just don't do it.

I gotta agree...I not only have a couple of Fender cases, I have a few generics as well and I have to take my trem(s) off with all of them. That said, even with my Mexi's and my Squiers, it's not like it's that difficult to screw and unscrew the trem bar. After a gig, I open the case, put my tuner and slide back in, wipe the guitar/neck down, unscrew the trem and put it in the accessories section of the case with the tuner (assuming I put it on the guitar in the first place) , lay the guitar in, roll up the strap and tuck in into the horn...pretty regular routine at this point :-)

I keep mine off while in the case. Sometimes I keep
it off when I'm playing it too.

I would leave it off in the case. And I have decided not to even use it until I can play well enough to warrant screwing that thingy in!

They should design a channel that leaves clearance for the bar with the case shut. They could patent it and make a buck or two.

There has been instances of broken trem bars from leaving them in, plus it's not good for the springs to be stretche dully when the case top depresses the bar. Eventually the springs would lose their ability to rewind...

I'd never leave a trem arm on. If that case gets hit hard enough, you'll risk breaking it off and then you'll have a heck of a time removing it from the tremolo block.

Depending on how far off the top the bridge is floated, it is possible to rotate the bar counterclockwise to the 7 o'clock position and get a bit more clearance on closing the case. However, the practice is not common. Keep in mind that you have to be continually kind when mounting and removing the bar whether screw-in or snap-in. Metal parts wear and threads strip.
