What's everyones' thoughts on the Eric Clapton Strats?

I certainly don't need another guitar but a guy has one on fleabay. A 2005 black one he claims that is mint with a like new case for $899. Seems cheap. or not?

I don't know, the black one are pretty common and I've seen 'em for under a grand so could be legit.

You have a die hard Clapton guitar owner here and a few more like me on the Forums. Asking about the guitar does not answer as many questions as playing one. Suggest you audition same before jumping. The one you're looking at has the the Vintage Noiseless pickups. The neck has a very different feel which you need to decide is for you. Not to mention the midboost which gives the guitar its teeth. These models don't seem to gain in used guitar price. It may be a good deal if the guitar is in condition represented. This is an auction and the seller is asking an opening bid of $899. You won't see that guitar for that number. He likely has a reserve price in mind which hasn't been announced nor has he posted a 'buy now for' price. 5 years ago this summer I purchased an '89 Pewter in mint condition which was offered at 'a buy now for' price. I probably overpaid for it, but I wanted that guitar and took it out of the bidding immediately. You'll just have to try your luck with the rest. Put in an opening bid. You have a week to test drive a Clapton at your local dealer. Keep us posted.

Additionally, I should have suggested that you scroll down and compare his opening bid request with many of the other guitars listed. That should give you some idea of where this guitar may eventually end up in price.

GC has some used EC's starting @ $949.99, and their prices are almost always negotiable. I'd ask for that one shipped @ $949.99. Otherwise, it'll be $949.99 + tax + shipping.

If you go with GC, make sure you get a 30-day return agreement. Sometimes used gear is sold as "sale is final". Confirm the 30-day return before you make the purchase so you don't get stuck with a dud or just don't like it.

http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/index.cfm?page=1&sort=price&dir=asc&srch&category=37&q=fender%20eric&distance=100

I did the search in Used Gear, Guitar, Fender Eric if that link don't work. If you try search variants, sometimes items listed weird come up that are sitting there, collecting dust, aching for a discount!

The price for a used guitar sounds about fair.

I've owned a EC Strast for over 10 years and It's my go to guitar for anything. I own a many Strats, but this is THE one I would never part with.

It ended up going for $990 + $60 shipping so probably no great deal. From what people have said, however, down the road an EC maybe something I want to look at. I'm a huge EC fan.

But at this point maybe I should focus more on learning how to play!

Ok, I know the auction is over but since you seem to still be considering, I'd like to toss my $.02 worth in here...

On the EC models, my suggestion is that unless you're familiar with the necks on these...and actually like them...then play one BEFORE you buy! If you're like me and prefer something like the standard modern C shape, you very well may not care for the Clapton necks. I'm a huge Clapton fan myself and quite frankly I would never own one of those. Nothing wrong with them, it's just all about the feel...and I just don't care for them at all. You can change the "sound" of virtually any Strat, but the feel...ya gotta live with that for as long as you own the instrument.

Now that said, again because you stated that you're a Clapton fan and this seems to be one of the reason's your considering this model, I would also like to reiterate comments I've made in other posts - owning a Clapton Sig Series is -NOT- going to make you sound like Clapton. I've said it over and over and I'll say it again...Clapton sounds like Clapton why? Because he -is- Clapton. And if you can play like Clapton, chances are you're going to get that "sound" without having to blow up to $1000 or more for a sig.

Just a couple things to think about...
Jim

I have a question about colors of the Clapton Strat. My first choice is a CS in Daphne Blue. They're pretty impossible to find.
My second choice would be Olympic White. But I've never seen a CS Clapton Strat in Olympic White, only the artist series. Do they not make a CS Clapton Strat in Olympic White?

Jim (lomitus),

Thank you also for your thoughtful response. Believe me, I didn't think buying an EC Strat was going to make me sound like Clapton. I am really glad you told me about the necks on the EC Sig's. I didn't realize they were that different. I will definitely try one out in a store should I ever consider one down the road. But with that knowledge is was definitely good I didn't chase this one on ebay.

Again, probably best I just get back to practicing!
