On that 'buy cheap, value increases, pass on to heirs, they retire to the Caribbean' master plan, I'd say chances are weak.

On that particular guitar, the 25XX series does have a bad rep. But modding/upgrading the guitar with any other trem would destroy any future price increases.
So maybe consider the guitar as an instrument, not an investment. Spare parts to the Kahler can still be found (at least whammyparts.com claims they have some), and you'd have the upgrade option open - if needed.

Thank you jmattis. My son plays and takes lessons, so I thought it would be cool to get him a strat from my era. I always heard great things about the MIJ strats so I assumed they were all created equal. I was looking for one that was a good player and something that might increase in value one day.

The more I read about the MIJ strats the more confused I get. I saw many complaints about the Kahler, but I also read the Schaller presented problems back in the day. It seems the reissues are the models that are held in high regard, so maybe I'll look for a deal on one of those (although not sure which tremolo system they have). Still going to give the one I posted about a try later this week, but at $379 it sounds like it is priced at its value, so not necessarily a great deal.

By the way, I never thought the guitar would buy a mansion one day! :D But if I bought for 379, and it was really worth 500 and it sounded really good, I'd be happy. If it had the potential to double its value 20 years from now that would be an added bonus. Unfortunately, I think my wife has trained me to say, "I had to buy it...it was a great deal!"
