Every Strat in 2004 had the 50th logo (USA strats) and so there is always people thinking they have the Limited Edition Anniversary Strats when there just 2004 American Series or Deluxes.

The 2004 50th Anniversary LTD line consisted of three sub-models, each having its own specific features construction-wise:

1. Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1954: a faithful replica of the original '54 Strat made using many of the same machines and manufacturing methods used almost 60 years ago.

Image

The Custom Shop used all of the same materials that went into the first 1954 Stratocasters, including a solid ash body, oversized AlNiCo III polepiece magnets, the styrene blend used for the pickup covers, knobs and switch cap and the PVA pickguard material. Reproductions of the original pickups were wound by Abigail Ybarra, who has been making Fender pickups since the 1950s. Additionally, all the plastic parts for the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1954 Stratocaster were retooled to historically correct shapes and specifications.

The Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1954 Stratocaster was available only with a lightly aged, vintage correct 2-colour sunburst lacquer finish and a one piece maple neck and fretboard.

2. 50th Anniversary American Series: essentially an American Series Stratocaster outfitted with the same pickups used on the Custom Shop 1954 Strat.

The solid ash bodies with polyurethane 2-colour sunburst finish, maple neck and parchment pickguard evoked the classic look of the original 1954 Stratocasters, while the Fender American Series synchronized tremolo bridge, custom staggered tuning machines, 9.5” radius fretboard and medium jumbo frets added a modern touch.

3. 50th Anniversary American Deluxe: a wonderful combination of vintage and modern features.

The 50th Anniversary American Deluxe Series Stratocaster was built with the highest standards in materials and craftsmanship, utilizing today’s most state-of-the-art manufacturing methods at Fender’s facility in Corona, California.

Only the most select solid alder has been used for the bodies on this model, which was available in 2-colour sunburst with a modern “C” shaped maple neck. This guitar also featured a trio of Fender Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups and S-1 switching, making this one of the most versatile guitars Fender has ever made.

Other refinements included a Deluxe 2-point synchronized tremolo bridge with pop-in arm, 3-ply parchment pickguard with commemorative logo and aged plastic parts, abalone dot inlays, deluxe staggered tuning machines and a special engraved neck plate celebrating the anniversary. The 50th Anniversary American Deluxe Strat came with a Meguiar Mist & Wipe Kit.

I had the deluxe and the AMSE versions

I sold the deluxe about a year later, The AMSE was and is my all time favorite Stratocaster.
My only complaint has been that they did such a great job on wood selection, single ply guard , amazing vintage tone pups , Maple neck and then installed a modern bridge :? why ?

Oh well it is still one of the finest playing and sounding guitars ever in my hands !

The deluxe with its gold hardware and noiseless pickups just never did it for me.

Some day maybe a CS version will come my way.
we are only one year away from these guitars becoming ten years old, what will Fender do for the 60th ??????

The deluxe has an overwound SCN pickup in the bridge position for crunchy lead tones.

Because these guitars were primarily designed to meet the demands of contemporary guitarists!

I understand you're resolutely a vintage buff... :)

Well not really, however a 54 strat anniversary model ought to look like a 54 strat right ?

Kinda silly to dress it in all of the other period correct close and give it converse shoes ! don't ya think ?
Then again they used modern tuners too so.......
Vintage looks modern refinements.

Any way, it is a seriously fine guitar, and the new HWY-1 has a nice vintage vibe to it.
Looking into a Surf Green refinish for it.

Yep the pickups on the 50th are to die for !

I just did a complete setup and string change on the HWY-1 and it is now a super star on its own
22 frets, rolled edge, nice maple board, and some pretty sweet pickups too.
I expected cheap pots and a cheapo five way when i pulled the neck and pick guard, not so, very nice quality electronics under the hood too.

Just need to strip the body and shoot it Surf Green and it would be a forever strat !!! 8)

PS Ernie Ball Rock N Roll Nickle strings are my all time favorite for strats !

One of the best things about the HWY1 are it's electronics. I swapted out the orininal pups and put in some CS '69s and changed out the white parts with all black. Now it's got that late '60s/'70s vibe I was going for.

I too looked at the 69 CS Pickups
Thought about something different, i've had Texas Specials and loved em !
I have CS 54's in my 50th and Love em !

Tell me more about the 69's please
Very aggressive ? Heavy mids ?

These stock pickups sound pretty darn good now so.........

anyone refinish a hwy one yet ? wondering just how much sanding it will need given the fact that I want to paint it a solid color ? (Surf Green)

That greasebucket circuit doesn't overload your sound with redundant lows when you roll of the highs!

Unless I can find someone with one of the Blonde finished ones they want to trade for a perfect condition three tone burst.

My 2002 had the blonde finish and its pretty 50's looking too.

I just don't need another Burst stratocaster, but I am very happy with the sound I'm getting with the new HWY-1

PS the neck and body dates on this one are only two months apart, march and may of 2006

That's a fine looking guitar and case. Nice to see you in here again with such an interesting discussion. Hope all is well with you and the family. Your observation about the guitar designs reflects the fact that often as not, the guitars are designed with 'vibe' in mind, rather than spec accuracy. You've been around the block on this one with us before for sure.

Hey Doc !
Long time my friend

I went on a gear hunt a few years ago and found that with a little work i could buy up tons of gear and do a little work on the guitars, amps pedals etc...
and end up with free gear.
It ended up being another job, on top of my 24-7 Bail agents job and e-bay got to be so hostile towards sellers that I stopped using them
Now I'm back to one job and the only gear I buy is for myself.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a gear junkie and buy some stuff only to find It's not my thing (bought used) and then I flip it on Craigs list.
This Hwy-1 was the result of a few trades.

Glad to see your still hanging around here !

You lucky guy !!!

I am going to spend some time trying to make that same move !
I really dislike where I am (location) and could really enjoy some living down south.

I went to school in Nashville TN and have missed it since !

Cold winters and cold people up this way

I was so suprised to see How long I've been hanging out here, made some good friends and learned a ton !!!
I don't post a lot, I try to only share when I think I can add something worthwhile, and sometimes just for fun 8)
