I'm looking to eBay a couple of guitars, including a Strat finished in black. To me, the finish on it looks great -- no wear, one very small ding. Except, when I hold it in the light at just the right angle, I can see almost microscopic marks in the finish.. kinda like very light scratches. Looking straight on, I don't see them.. If the finish includes a clear coat, I'd say the marks are in the clearcoat, not the color coat. They definitely don't go through the color coat.

So, I tried some Scratch-X (by hand) and then some Virtuoso cleaner and polish -- marks still there.. Any suggestions or is this normal for a guitar that's 8 years old, i.el, "normal wear"? I'm guessing this must be the case for most guitars with even minimal use since this guitar has been in its case most of the time...

Oldguy101...fine finish scratches on an 8 year old guitar? Yep perfectly normal. It is only new once. I wouldn't be worried about them. As for relisting it for sale, just be honest and tell them it is used. No one expects a used guitar to be perfect.

Of course this is all based on the fact that I have not seen said guitar.

Thanks for the perspective. I kinda think I'm being too picky.. If I received a used guitar with the finish in this shape, I wouldn't be disappointed at all.. I'll post some pictures later today..

Sounds perfectly normal for an 8 year old guitar to me - believe me, if I had owned and gigged it for 8 years, then you'd probably see some damage worth worrying about.

I'm fanatical about the appearance of my guitars and after a few years now use nothing but Meguiar's Ultimate Polish to remove fine scratches, then apply Gerlitz guitar wax. Believe me they work and Meguiar's is not overly abrasive, so will not do further damage or dull the finish.
