S9 + 5 digit from 1978 to 1981

Pot code if I read right ; 137-7451

137 = CTS brand
51= the week
74= 1974

serial number
http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... ct-dating/

Pot code;

For more information you have to look on the neck/ body pocket. Can't say more that Fender use "old" stock for the pot, but guitar could be built between 1978 to 1981

This is an interesting piece - the 3-way switch would have been stock for the time the pots are dated (51st week of 1974 manufacture means the pots were likely used some time in 1975). That would also explain the white plastic parts on this one as the "S9xxxxx" serial number Strats from 1978-1980 would have had black plastic parts (starting in 1981 they began mixing white and black and by 1982 they were mostly white - but you often found the black parts on natural finish 1982 "Smith" Strats).

There could be a couple of explanations for this one with the neck being a late 70s and the pots having the late 1974 dates (which would also explain the :

1. It's the body/electronics of a 1975-ish hard tail Strat with the neck from a later (1978-1981-ish) era as a replacement (or a neck swap) somewhere down the line.

2. It's a 1978-1981-ish hard tail Strat with the pickup assembly from a 1975-ish Strat as a replacement.

Just out of curiosity - is there another serial number on the neck plate, or does it just have the Fender "F" and some patent numbers? A pre-1976 Strat would have had the serial number on the neck plate instead of the headstock. If so then it's most likely explanation #1 - a neck swap at some point (could be replacing a broken neck or maybe the owner just liked this neck better and wanted it on this body). If there is no serial number on the neck plate then it's likely explanation #2 - a pickgaurd assembly swap at some.

I suppose it's possible that someone in the factory found an unused pickguard assembly from circa 1975 and installed it during assembly in the late 70s because a dealer special ordered white plastic hardware - making it explanation #2 but a factory oddity instead of an owner modification.

like i said on your other post Tamey75 you have a beautiful strat i have the same one .very heavy,heavier than an old les paul mine weighs 14 pounds . its northern straight or har grain ash .the heaviest strats made with great sustain and powerful tone.Tamey75 never sell that strat .keep it in the family,as fender did not make very many with this type of tonewood :) all the best Farrahnsmom

:) i can not stop coming back to this post .when you removed the neck .is there a large stamped letter A on the body where the neck was.90 percent of the time fender stamped a letter A on the body where the neck was. this meant that the body was to be natural finish .by the way my serial number is S955078.again luv your strat .oh and by the way your strat was made 1978-1981 i know this because of the serial number and the tonewood take care Farrahnsmom
