I am in the market for a new strat. I really have Gas for an EJ or a JB model, really leaning to the EJ. I am totally bummed because even though I live only 30 miles from Boston, no stores carry theses guitars, not even the 5 Guitar Centers I have within an hour of me. I can't find a mom n pop that has them either. Have any of you guys bought a guitar like this from an on line retailer? It goes against all my logic to do such a thing. I am also considering just taking a weekend ride to NYC, hitting 48th street and playing as many as I can and picking the best one. What do you guys think?

You can certainly tell, from the products specs, that you are dealing with two completely different instrument designs. There's no argument that playing and comparing them side by side is a must. It's been some time since I've been through midtown. If memory serves, you'll basically have Rudy's, and Sam Ash in that area although something nagging in my brain is telling me that Sam Ash relocated out of there. There are also some notable M&P's in lower Manhattan. A large GC on 14th, which is listed as a Showcase Dealer. Rudy's has a high end store on Broome Street, and there's the venerable Matt Umanov's on Bleeker. There's also Chelsea Street Guitars, and another one in that area, on the East side whose name escapes me at the moment. Drawing a line west, the closest Showcase Dealer to you is probably Alto Music in Middletown NY which Route 84 will get you to. It might be closer than NYC. You might also PM 'Miami Mike' and ask him if he has any recommendations for you locally before you get behind the wheel. In any event, I would start by calling around to those vendors of interest and asking what they have in stock.

Are you to the north, west or south of town?
North - try Performance Music (Woburn), ask for Joe.
South - Matt's Music /Weymouth), Boston Guitar Works (Brockton)
West - Guitar Stop (Arlington), Mr Music (Allston) Music Go Round (Natick) and some small Fender shops from Framingham Centre to Worcester.

Maybe Frankie The Kid from the south shore knows of more down his way too?

Good luck!

So let it be written..so let it be done. Welcome to The Forums. Apologies for not having extended same to you at the first. This ought to give you an idea of how well we are networked and what close friends some of us have become. Hope this has given you some additional sources. Mike may just be able to get in touch with Frankie in order to expand your horizons. Keep us posted on what you've learned for yourself about these two guitars.
Doc

Crossroads in Hanover and Scituate Music Center are the local Authorized dealers down around here.
Jerry at Scituate as a reputation of not being easy to get along with, but I've known him for years... always treats me good. His store's so packed you have to walk sideways.
Just got off the phone with him, says he's got a couple of EJ's in stock.
No JB's tho.
Crossroads has neither... just EC's.
Shot an e-mail to another guy who sells used, but top-o-the-line equipment, but haven't heard back yet. His store is called ReTunes and he's in Hanover as well. He's not authorized tho. I bought my Strat there and an Epi Les Paul for my youngest boy.

Yes, Chris (aka Swede) from Crossroads is a good guy!

If you've never played a Clapton, you might want to take it out for a test drive too.

Guys thanks so much for the help! I never knew there were so many great music shops close by. I'll be shopping around for a couple weeks and I'll make sure I let these guys know where I got the referrals from. I'll keep you guys posted and maybe hit you up for some opinions as I get out and play some of these fine fiddles. I really appreciate the help!

Happy hunting. Pictures are required when the final choice is made.

I just bought a Jeff Beck Strat and a Blackstar amp. The JB is a great choice and the amp goes from Fender clean to Marshall distortion. I`m happy with both investments I made and I hope you find what your looking for too.

Also try Mouradian Guitars in Winchester. They deal mostly with used stuff, but you never know what they might have.

Jim and Jon Mouradian are excellent sources to check out as is TJ Thompson in Maynard, MA.
