I have been experiencing a lot of fret buzz from my new American Deluxe Strat. I can hear it through the amp and it sounds terrible. I am using size 10 strings. I brought it to a shop and the guy told me the first two frets were high? OK, so a new $1,200 guitar with high frets. $60 and I told him to fix them and set it up. He set up the action a little lower then stock. Seemed ok in the shop so I brought it home and jammed. Or course I had my distortion pedal on and it sounded fine. The next day I fire it up and the thing buzzes worse than before. No matter where I fret it buzzes. I turned up my amp but it is buzzing right through it. What can I do? The shop is an hour away. Thanks guys.

With a few tools you can attempt your own set up. Unless the fret issue remains you can probably solve your own problem - I did, although it took me several tries over a two week period to get it to where I wanted the action w/o audible buzz through the amp. I still have it acoustically, but NOT through the amp. The key is getting a good gauge to set the string height - that's what took me the time. Once I had a good gauge it was a piece of cake.

If you paid 60 buck then I'd go back to the shop with the guitar and complain. If its a pro setup it should not be buzzing.

Exactly, and if he can't fix it get your $60 back!

I agree with your sentiments, however the additional problem guys, as I see it, is his comment that the shop is an hour's drive away. By the time he gets done driving back an forth and dicking with the bozo who did the work it just may be worth trying to fix it himself - IF it is just a bridge adjustment.

Just a thought, he says it was fine in the store and it was the next day it was buzzing all over. Could it be due to variance in temp/humidity between the two places and wood movement? Sounds to me like the truss rod needs a little adjusting.

My Strat did something similar after I changed brands of strings, same gauge but different manufacturer. Played fine for a day or two after the set up but then all the sudden fret buzz from hell, seems the strings were higher tension and the neck needed a little adjusting to compensate.

Ooooooo, did you just come in to make trouble??? :D Excellent points. I'd still try the self set up first to see if that doesn't "Git 'er done."

Hey uteowl - I need to get some set up work done on my new American Standard Strat. Can you recommend a good shop in town? (I'm in the Portland area too) It's been years since I've taken my guitar into a shop.

I just had my Les Paul in at Portland Music (Beaverton) and they charged $20 for neck and bridge adjustment since I already had the strings, usually charge around $35. Don't know if each store charges same. PMB charges same for Fenders and Gibsons.

Since you're talking about your NEW American Std Strat the following may not be of use or interest, but...They also recommended that I look at having some fretwork done 'cause my 13th fret is high and recommended Portland Fret Works 3039 NE Alberta (503)249-3737. PFW quoted me $110 for complete fret redress. Remember that this was for a Gibson, I don't know if a Fender -especially a maple fretboard - will or would cost more.

uteowl - Thanks man.
Let me know if you have your frets dressed on your Les Paul and if you're satisfied with the work. I have a PRS Singlecut that is about due.

I would really like to find a good, reliable shop - I don't mind paying a little extra for top notch work (I'm one of those players with a day job) :D

I'll give Portland Fret Works a shout tomorrow.

Good luck, mebe we'll cross paths in town sometime.

Sounds like it needs to be setup for the climate it will be played in.

I measured every possible thing according to the trusty owner’s manual and is set up perfect. The string height and the pickup height are spot on. The climate itself may be a bit different by 10 degrees. He set it up in a music store and I have been playing it at home. Seems odd. It seems like the frets that were dressed are causing the problem. I raised the action a full turn and still have the same issue. I even checked to see how hard I was picking and fretting the notes. There is definitely an issue here. I am going to make the drive back and have him fix it while I wait.

That would be the wise thing to do.
