Hi & Happy New Year

I wonder why the Strat Special s-s-s does not come in Black and White.

Also why the Strat Special h-s-s does not come in White.

The Special P Bass Jazz Bass & Telecaster do. Tele no Black though.

I love this series, got a 09 Highway 1 sunburst h-s-s.
They are just simply wonderful and remind me of when I was young working summer jobs to buy Fenders.

Im going to get some more of these guitars, they are fun simple guitars easy to mod.
So far I put a Lonestar pickguard on mine and a Dimarzio Evolution F spaced in the bridge.
I also put a Blade Runner Tremolo with white Graph Tech nut and string guides.
It came with locking tuners the 1st owner put in.

The guitar sounds amazing and stays in tune now as good as any can.

The Olympic White American Special Strats were Factory Special Runs commissioned by certain retailers such as Guitar Center and Sam Ash.

Each guitar has a specific feature set on their own.

If you want an Olympic White USA Special SSS with all-black plastic parts, just replace the stock parchment ones.

Everyone who wants an Olympic USA Special HSS with a maple neck can easily replace the stock rosewood neck with a maple from an SSS model.

I don't think Sam Ash and Guitar Center have those OW USA Specials in stock since they're no longer into production.

My recommendation is to start a good search in the used market.

Try to find one on eBay.

Good luck, mate!

The guitar you've posted looks very Gilmourish, except David's "Black Strat" has a '57 reissue neck, 1-ply matte black vinyl pickguard and a 2-way mini toggle allowing further pickup combinations!

Im sure Pink Floyd was the reason this guitar was in mass production in the late 70s. I recieved one for my 16th birthday in 1979. The pictures I posted are the custom shop 70s relic that was in production a few years back.

Yeah, Dave bought it with a big headstock. That black one looks cool.

All the best,
Robin

The Black Strat was fitted with a '63 rosewood neck several times, here's a photo of Dave playing the guitar with the early-to-mid 60s neck:

Another shot of the Black Strat with the '63 neck. Dave had put a humbucker on it around 1973.

The humbucker mod was shortlived.

Yeah I have the black strat book it say the original replacement for the first one that was stolen is hanging in Rome Hard Rock now. Its the one from Live in Pompei. Pink Floyd Trower and Hendrix were huge to me when I got my strat. It was just a stock store one Fender produced.

That 70s strat changed my life. I became a more serious player after I got it in 1979. That strat and an old beater late 60s les paul standard carried me into my 20s.
Once Eddie Van Halen came onto the scene he conviced us all we should ruin our strats and I was no exception.
I did look at that 70s custom shop relic when it came out, but the price and the original things I didnt like discouraged me. The three bolt neck the tuners and 21 frets. I also couldnt justify paying extra to have someone beat my guitar up for me. Im pretty good at that myself. :)

Jimi and Dave were not alone.

CBS Large Headstock Strats became a long-time favorite of such artists as Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore, Tom DeLonge, Robin Trower, Bonnie Raitt and Wayne Kramer, to name a few.

Even Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton used those guitars!

CBS is always credited for the large headstock and 3 bolt neck but the ultimate fender encyclopedia and dvd that came out 2 years ago said Leo Fender added those before he left the company. His last design change for the Fender Stratocaster.

The large headstock was intended to prevent strings from warping.

It was introduced on the strat in 1966 right? You ask me it has more tone and sustain. I like your new user avatar by the way.
