I just bought this Mexican early 60s strat RI. I just sold my original 64 and this one is really a great guitar. Very similar. It even has the string ends only a 1/4 inch or so into the block like an original. That and it has a pretty nice striped neck. Please can any one tell me what model this is?I got it used at a fender dealer and they didn't know why it was so nice. Note it has a classic bridge so it is not the Mexican custom.

Hi Bill johnson from Victoria,

Very nice guitar, great flame on the neck!

There is no such thing as a "60s RI", it looks like a "Classic Series 60s". BTW, the string holes in the block are much deeper than an original. On an original block, the ball ends of the strings are nearly flush with the edge of the block. One of the best improvements that you can make to this guitar is to ditch the cast block and install a Callaham which is like an original with the correct depth on the string holes.

According to the serial number, it is a 2010 to 2011.

In the past, Mike Eldred has differed strongly on this question. I'd love to know if there is anything beyond company loyalty which motivates him to do so.

ZZ Doc...Good question...but IMHO changing the block from the cast zinc ones to a nice hefty steel one (and a big thanks to Arjay for telling me about the spacing difference) it made a huge difference in my MIM 60's Classic Series guitar. It has much more zing to it acoustically now, and it has a what I would call much more quack to it now, and on a side note I did not go with a Callaham...too expensive!

But as Martian would say...YMMV.

Maybe spite or fear? In lieu of the recent changes to the CS bridge blocks, ie actually getting the string hole depth right despite the deceitful references to using "original tooling", I'd say that ME is either misinformed, or just plain deceitful. I would prefer to believe the former.

I should have qualified that myself, there are other steel blocks that would also be an improvement over the cast block, Callaham is just my personal preference. Thanks T2! :)

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt in saying 'neither' where he is concerned. They're using a copper infused block in the new American Standards now, aren't they? There was a thread in which he made a definitive statement about the Callaham system.

Yes, definitive, unproven and uncalled-for IMO. ME also stated definitively at that time that the blocks that the CS made were just like the originals, and they were not.

That only leaves the two options that I mentioned as far as I'm concerned. It is clear that the Callaham block and the CS block are different. The weight difference alone was quite a bit, the CS block being much lighter.

Yes, Fender is still using the cast block in the Am Std. That's OK, I already have a Callaham block ready to put in, and ordering more. Great blocks!

This block is cast zink but the string depth is correct. I've never seen another modern fender strat with one of these. It has a slab board RW board. Appears to be a three piece alder body. Three color burst. There is a photo showing the magnets and how the are set hight wise. Nothing else I can see seems to differ from my original.

As to selling a 64, it was very painful. I'd owned the guitar since 1980 when I paid $500 for it. I recently had it restored very well. I was given a lot of money for it. I rarely ever used it as it was uninsured. I have owned 25 strats or more and do not fear playing many guitars. I use rental guitars and back line amps frequently. Flying around with guitars and amps cost too much. I do carry a small fx board. I only have to worry about playing the right notes.

I would really like to know what model it is please? Thanks for guesses.
