I normally keep my strat on a stand all year long, is there certain time of the year I should keep it in the case because of temperature changes an humidity changes? I live in Utah so we have hot summers and very cold winters. My guitars and amps are typically kept in the basement, but it is a finished basement.

Thanks,
Sean

Ambient humidity is more of a concern than indoor temperature variations.

Hi
In my "room" I have a humidifier, I try to keep about 50% humidity. I live in the mid south so its only winter that it runs...

You need humidifier only if go down under 20% for a solid body guitar. Acoustic need around 40% .

Bill,
50 % it too much, but almost all humidity gauge are false 1 years after buying. You can have 30 % ot 60% in you home and read 50% with your H' gauge

I keep a room humidifier in my music room as I keep my guitars (acoustic and electric) on wall hangers or in stands most of the time. It does pay to keep the room between 45 and 50% humidity to prevent wood shrinkage during the colder months when your home heater tends to suck the moisture out of the air.

If your guitar is suffering ill effects it will be most noticeable on the edge of the neck where your frets seem to have grown out past the wood and grab your hand as you play. (fret sprout). Its really the wood in the neck contracting from less moisture. It takes awhile for this to occur but it can be remedied by rehydrating the wood with a humidifier. In extreme cases it can affect the joints and seams of acoustics and cause damage that can be expensive to repair.

You can find a decent room humidifier at most big box retailers like Home Depot, Lowes etc...

I have a "beemis" consol. As far as humidity levels, I have alway kept around the 50%range I've had no issues and my guitars stay in tune. I also am most comfortable in that range 8)

Actually, the cold temperature outside is what sucks the moisture out of the air, not heat. Air conditioners dehumidify by squeezing the moisture from humid air, as evidenced by the water condensing on the coil. If you notice, a dehumidifier is an air conditioner that sometimes uses a heater to regulate the output temperature. Heat does nothing towards removing moisture from the air. Hot air can have much more moisture content than colder air, so moisture will evaporate with enough heat, into the air, causing the air to be more humid.

Point taken Shimmilou. I just know that my humididfier runs almost constantly on the colder days when my heat pump is working overtime but rarely comes on in the summer even with the A/C running constantly.

I've generally found with a quality solid body electric like the Strat, if you store it in a climate controlled area, you'll be just fine. Play it, maintain it, love it, and keep it out of sunlight and she'll be just fine. The big thing is whether you case it or display it, don't just let it sit there  .
