Don't laugh if you've never played one. Not my favorite flavor of Strat by a long shot but they did have a unique feel and sound - I for one don't like the extra wide necks or the FreeFlyte trem but you have to give Fender credit for trying to move with the times (active noiseless circuit with a dummy coil, mid-boost, the TBX circuit, etc.). The first 2-3 Kings X records have Elite Strats (run into Gibson solid state LAB amps) all over them - Ty Tabor was a huge fan and continued to use the MDX preamp circuit card from one as a preamp for years.

That they were - combine that dummy coil with its circuitry, the MDX circuit card, and the springs/claw of the FreeFlyte and you've got a guitar I don't want to work on.

But if you view it as a "stepping stone" to later models developed by FMIC then it is still an important part of Fender's history.

The pickups and preamp from Ty's old Elite had been rackmounted a couple of years ago.

The Elite became the basis for the Eric Clapton signature series, the first artist model which officially debuted in 1988.

Unlike the Elite the Clapton Strat has a redesigned MDX circuit which adds up to +25dB of boost in the midrange peaking at 500Hz. Later, the Elite electronics were adopted by other Fender endorsees such as Buddy Guy, Richie Sambora, Norbert Krief, Gerry McGee and Nokie Edwards.

In the case of the Richie Sambora Stratocaster a DiMarzio humbucker has been hooked into the MDX circuit.

Have a happy 2013!

I turned 70 in August and, as far as I know [from our last counting] I remain the oldest participating member. There was another guy who narrowly edged me out at one point, but I haven't seen anything of him in a long time. Nor have I heard anything of Paul Harvey's son in a long while, after having taken over when his father died.

+1 - and although I'm "only" 50 I also remember Paul Harvey
