Hi there, first time poster (who discovered I registered a few years ago)

I stumbled upon this forum, and read some threads about determining you guitar's age, so I thought I would check my strat, just for fun. I did however discover something I found a bit strange...

The guitar was purchased in New York (Guitar Center, 14th Street) in May 2010, and is (apparently) a Fender American Special Stratocaster.

I found out this series was introduced in January 2010, and that Fender changed their Serial Numbering sequence in March that year. Pre-March is 10+7 digits, and after March is US10+6 digits. I don't know how long it takes for a guitar from being built till it ends up in a store, and gets bought, but I would assume that a guitar bought in May 2010 possibly could have any of those two sequences? Either 10+7 or US10+6?

Here's mine:

There is 6 digits behind the frist 10, but no "US" in front of it :o .

Any idea if this is correct?

Almost always 6 digits behind the "10" or behind the "US10". Where do you get "10+7"? Looks legit to me.

I never heard of the "10" being followed by 7 digits either; only the "10" followed by 6 digits.

Don't sweat it Martin - that serial number looks fine for an early 2010 from before they started using the "US10" prexfix.

I just saw the "+7 digits" info on the Fender product dating page. I believe that is a mistake on Fenders part, it should say "+6 digits", whether preceded by 10 or US10.

Thank you for that.

Yes, that's where I read it.

Quote:
“10” prefix followed by a space and seven digits (late 2009 through March 2010)

and

Quote:
US10 + 6 digits (beginning in about March 2010)

Thank you :)

As shimmilou says that must just be a typo on Fender's product dating page.

Fender used those "10 + 6 digits" serial numbers on almost all the USA-built guitars there during the first 3 months of 2010. You can find them on American Deluxes, American Standards, American Specials, Highway 1s, and USA-built Artist Signature models; just about the only USA Fenders that didn't use that style were the AVs and the Eric Johnson Strat which have the serial numbers on the neck plate. Of course there could be other Artist Signature models that have unique serial number systems - for instance I'm not sure what they are putting on the James Burton Teles these days.
