Thank you John C for your help. I have the S-1 switch, so I guess my guitar have samarum cobalt pickups then ;-)

No, I believe that would be the 2004 Frontline; since it was preprinted for distribution in January 2004 it would have a 2003 copywrite date on it. American Deluxes with SCNs were not released for purchase until after the NAMM show in mid-January.

I remember that issue very well. There was a feature article on Bill Lawrence and those pickups. Lord knows what they thought they had created with them!
I'm also given to undertand that they are sealed. That is to say that the covers cannot be removed. I had them put in a CS guitar I ordered the following year, and they were also put in the '57VHR. Some of what I've read in the Forums suggests that members believe them to be superior to the N3's. Progress is often not.

Hi there. Generally the SCNs have a small scn embossed on the pickup cover as John C has mentioned so that may help. If it is the HSS model the pickups are wound slightly hotter to match the humbucker so they are not the same as the sss set.
Not to sound contrary but the covers can be removed though the pickups are deeper than standard so only scn pickup covers fit scn pickups. :D

Apparently Fender built these pickups both with and without the embossed "SCN" on the pickup covers. I have two sets in two different guitars (both of them parts-o-casters). I bought loaded pickguards for each and one came furnished with the SCN-marked covers installed while the pickups in the other one are "incognito".

@jimmy_james

On the SSS models only the bridge pickup is overwound.

Agreed! I think that possibly that is what the s and p markings mean on the pus do you think i.e. s= overwound?

Interesting to hear about the embossed non embossed as well so there is always something to keep me guessing! Thanks guys :D

Yep! :P

For the post-2010 Deluxe HSS Fender used two N3s with the hotter-sounding AlNiCO III magnets to complement the Atomic.

However, the product description no longer mentions this detail.
