Hello, everyone! My name is John. I have been playing guitar for a little over a year now, and I recently (on Black Friday) decided to go out and purchase my first electric guitar. Since I am a poor college student, all I could afford was a Mexican made Fender Stratocaster. I love it! Got it for $399 new, don't know if that was a decent deal or not, but Guitar Center doesn't have the craziest Black Friday deals, I find.

I just have a couple questions. My Strat is a 2012, right? I'm sorry, I'm a bit of an amateur!

Also, it's a Standard Mexican Strat?

If I wanted to replace the pickups down the road, and I want a grungy, alternative sound, akin to Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc., what sort of pickups should I get?

Thank you for any and all help!

Welcome to the Forums. Just wait until you see what constitutes an opinion around here. You won't be sorry you asked. In fact, you can drop down two posts and begin reading. The same suggestions apply to single coil types which your guitar is supplied with though it is routed for humbuckers as well which would permit you to change your pickguard in order to accommodate them. You might also want to advised of the kind of amplifcation and signal chain your using. Tone has alot to do with that as well...not just the guitar.

Hi Johnny and welcome. You made a wise choice for a first electric, the MIM Strat is a great guitar as is, and can easily be modified to what ever pickup configuration you may want in the future. I have MIM Fenders and American Fenders, and I love them all.

Man, what a deal for a MIM Strat... nice find!

Now, you have a very clean-sounding guitar as it is.
This makes it a lot more versatile when working with different modeling amps and effects pedals.
Seeing as this is your first electric, rather than change pick-ups at this point and commiting your guitar to a specialized sound, try a few basic pedals which result in the sound you're looking for.
And in the budget price-bracket, pick-ups are more-or-less as expensive as pedals,
but pedals are way easier to interchange.

Ok, now I'm sure I'm going to get paved by the experts saying one can't compare the two.
(and we haven't even looked at your amp and modeling options),
BUT:
As you start to get more exposure to different sounding guitar/pick-up configurations, you'll find just the one that hits that sweet spot you're looking for.

Ah!! I didn't look at the pics out of the gate. This is the guitar I've called the Gilmour Clone. Nice. You have a lot of possibilities here.

This guitar would sound much better with a set of EMGs! :D

Except the mini switch for the extra pickup combinations is missing.

Hi John, welcome to the forum, you really couldn't have done much better for a first guitar, MIM Strats are great guitars right out of the box.I have 2 MIM Strats,a Standard lefty- flipped for right hand so I can do Hendrix covers and it can realistically nail the Hendrixy Strat tone.I also have a Jimmie Vaughn Strat with Tex-Mex pickups and it's a simply incredible guitar with the tone of a mid 60s "L" series Strat.

The standard issue pickups are plenty good in my experience and you can coax just about any sound out of them as an MIA Strat. If you ever do consider a pickup swap, the Tex-Mex pickups are just excellent.Lindy Frallins are also great pickups but can be a bit pricey but that price guarantees you a top quality pickup.
