Everybody probably knows this, but I was just tweaking my pickup hight and it's truely amazing how much it can change your sound. Specifically, the relationship of the pickups to each other can change the sound of the 2 and 4 postions greatly.
I bumped up the neck pickup very slightly and moved the bass side closer to the strings than on the middle pickup. It made a huge difference in neck+middle sound.

Remember that the closer the pickup is to the strings that you will get more volume, more distortion, but less sustain.

The magic of pickup height adjustment

I've often thought that a lot of guys could save the money (sometimes a lot of money) they spend on replacing their stock pickups IF they just spent some time (okay, maybe a lot of time) adjusting the pickup heights to get the sound they desire.

I try to give that advice.

I came across the same thing. I'm using EMGs (bought axe used) and when I had it my local music shop the manager suggested that my pups were too close to the strings. (I'd never read the EMG site to learn that they can be as close to the string as desired because they're bar magnets not pole).

so I backed them down a bit. They sounded very different, Ok but I'd lost sustain (function of the active pups I guess, 'cause this flies in the face of the passive pup axiom; see previous post) - and they had become very weak. Moved them back up even closer then they had been and voila! I had the tone I was looking for. I know that EMGs are not popular on this site, but they work for me and my style.
