URGENT! Ever seen a trem cavity like this on a MiJ Strat???

I had a 1986 MIJ Strat that was recessed, but not sure if it had so much wood on the one side like that, can't remember.

Ah-ha. Then I think you likely missed a legit MIJ Contemporary Strat - but I doubt it's a heartbreaking loss. Perfectly nice guitars, but not gold dust.

my 85 MIJ neck did not have string trees, but it does have the 4 screw holes where the locking nut use to be.

I guess it was legitimate. I didn't know about the recessed trem cavity, but this is the nut on the Contemporary.

Yes, everything screamed "Contemporary" on this strat, combined with still some minor doubts.

Since I used to own one and since it was gone again (sold) faster than I could name it (my guitars all have names :oops:

), I didn't want to buy another one, no matter whether the crappy (in other words: not liked by me) Schaller System 1, 2 or 3 has been removed and exchanged for a Fender vintage trem or not. It didn't meet my expectations and preferences in playing feel and sound. The price went higher than what I would have bid for a non-contemporary as well.
You're right, no big loss.
