Hi lounge, so. i'm considering on throwing some new pickups into my strat. i play anything/everything, from blues, classic rock, rock and punk and metal. though it'll be moreso for classic / hard rock / blues / heavy blues rock with the strat. so based on that quick profile of my music, what do thou gentlemen of the lounge (and ladies if any) recommend?

If it is supposed to be suitable for ALL styles of music you mentioned, the smartest way would be a HSH configuration with splittable humbuckers.
In that case I personally would use either the Ibanez JEM approach (Paf Pro) or the Satriani setup (Fred at bridge, Tone Zone at neck). I haven't done that yet, since I have a JEM.

I would not use active pickups like EMG or similar, I don't like their clean sounds.

If you would skip the metal, then I would go HH with 2 P90s. I have those in one of my project strats (actually they're Tonerider Rebel90s).
You don't see that very often, except with the new Blacktop Series by Fender (dunno if those are P90s, but at least they're HBs with chrome cover)

not looking to rout the guitar, single coil style preferably
seymour duncan hot strat, maybe a hot rail? or any of dimarzios strat pickups?
i have rail style humbuckers in a LP i own, curious to see what the stacked/rail kinda thing sounds in a strat setup. or maybe just get some normal pole style strat pickups to keep it simple? totally new to the replacing pickup game haha

Just buy a load of guitars and set them all up for each different style.

It's how I found happiness. You're never going to get one guitar to do it all. Even crossing the classic rock/metal line. You'll always be thinking "...what if?"

Or you could just play it like all them fellas way back when did.

In that case I'd go for Jeff Beck Jr. (Bridge) and two Hot Rails.

I had that configuration in my MiJ Iron Maiden Signature from the 90s and it was haaawt!!!!

so if i were to throw a hotrail in to give it some balls, would i lose that bridge-middle tone? (sultans of swing)
edit: i don't use the guitar for metal so thats out of the equation

I'm a big fan of DiMarzio's Virtual Vintage noiseless. They've got plenty of balls, sound like a Strat, and are quiet as a church mouse.

The Iron Maiden Stratocaster was made in 2001; it was fashioned after Adrian Smith's black axe.

Here's a combination that seems pretty diverse (OK, so I have a strat that I put these in and I can play just about anything with it.): Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 pros in the neck and middle positions and a Seymour Duncan lil screamin demon in the bridge position. This combination of pickups can do clean, blues, classic rock, and even some metal. Hope this helps!

A few days ago, I swapped the Bridge Pickup of a friend's 97' Fender with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail.

The sound is really hot - but it also has the sound of a Strat in it. I love it.

His problem was, that his strat didn't sound any good at distortion level in comparison to the humbucker-guitar of his bandmate.

Now he hasn't got any problems.

Just my own personal opinions of course, but if you play on the "heavier side of rock", you can't really go wrong with the Duncan Hot Rails...awesome pickups! That said, my only little niggle with them is that they don't really sound all that "Stratty"...they do tend to have more of a humbucker sound than a traditional Strat. If you're looking for something that has a bit more traditional Strat sound, then look at the Duncan SSL series instead.

Yeah, you could be right!
I re-checked. My pictures unfortunately don't show the serial number but I bought it after it was tested in the Gitarre & Bass Fender Special edition (German magazine).
The magazine is from early 2001 with prices still shown in German Marks instead of Euros (I just quickly digged it out ;) ).

I could've sworn it was a 1996 but it seems I remembered incorrectly.

Dimarzio "Area"/virtual Vintage pickups are fantastic.
The Heavy Blues 2 in the bridge earns its name.
The only thing better IMHO is the Kinman pickups.
