Ok...some people seem to forget (or at least have no idea) that 7 string guitars are very commonly used by jazz guitarists. Look em up. big fat hollow body arch tops. Plenty of arch top luthiers make 7 strings models. Not just for metal guitarists.

Jazz guitarist George Van Eps is one of the first artists who used a 7-string guitar. Gretsch had built a George Van Eps signature model in the late 1960s with 6 and 7 strings. Unlike many modern 7-string guitars, George's Gretsch signature model used a low A string instead of the usual low B. This guitar has been taken out of production at the fall of the 1970s.

This sunburst Van Eps 7-string was made in 1977.

I really dislike the tone of extended range guitars, they sound awful. I prefer to have a good 'ol 6-string with the standard tuning scale instead of having those unnatural-sounding instruments.

I agree with you 100% Chromeface,if I wanted to play in the lower registers,I'd take up bass.

AFAIK, Fender has made in the early 2000s a Sub-Sonic pair of Stratocasters and Telecasters with a 27" scale length "for guitarists who like the 7-string growl but prefer the feel of a 6-string." None of these short-lived guitars were successful.

A friend of mine owned an Ibanez 7-string; one evening I tuned it to Open G (+1? LOL). The tuning was thus (low to high): GDGDGBD. I played slide on it, and it sounded pretty cool, especially hitting those lower-than-low riffs on that heaviest string.

It was fun, but I don't think I would go out and buy one, even if it were a Stratocaster. It was just a fun little distraction, not a way of life for me...

I think I would prefer a Fender VI or a baritone or maybe a Sub-Sonic...weren't the IV and the Sub-Sonic technically baritones anyway, or am I wrong? :?:

Modern 7-string guitars are primarily suited for nu-metal.

IMHO, this Squier Double Fat Strat VII with the dual Blaze II humbuckers has plenty of Steve Vai vibe on it. If you add a Blaze II single-coil in the middle, refinish the body in Loch Ness Green, put a 3-ply aged parchment pickguard, an Edge trem and a Warmoth maple neck, you'll get a Squier 7-String Green Meanie replica without the price tag.

Funny thing is the Dimarzio sound is perfect for Jazz.
And not to mention on a Squier Hardtail strat....
The bottom end really adds some versatility.
IMHO Nu-metal seems like such a crappy label to me.
A lot of great bands were labled as such, and they aren't similar in sound to each other. It seem like such a broad label.

As far as the "Green Meanie".....the thought had crossed my mind when I was buying the pickups. It's funny you brought that up.-N 8)
