I've never heard or have seen a 7 string guitar. I guess I'm going to have to crawl out of my cave more often, and look at the real word, every now and again..

What is the purpose of the extra string? Do you play chords in the same way as a 6 string.....or do you have to learn a new style of playing chords?

The extra string is a baritone B (low-B string above the low-E string).

E --
B --
G --
D ==
A ==
E ==
B ==

You can play the same chords since the other six strings are tuned the same way. You'll have to adjust a bit to include the B. For instance, you'll have to barre further. As long as you know your notes, one should not have any problems building chords that include the B string here.

I think that the purpose is to have a bassier range - for stuff like Goth and Metal especially.

Thanks! Now I've learned something. You explained it fully. Now I'm going to have to look for one (out of curiosity), the next time I go to Guitar Center.

Nah. I'm chronically small handed and I can play a bass or 7-string (or some of the nastier classical stuff which can be evil). It is just a matter of adaptation and practice. Can't play some Hendrix stuff or Petrucci especially (I hate him). One good thing about guitar is that there is almost always another way to play the same thing (even if it's a bit of cheatin'). :)

Lot of bands were using seven string guitars (or extreme drop tunings) a few years back, but don't ask me to name any! :oops: I didn't really pay too much attention to that kind of music at the time.

Steve Vai is the only *user* I can name for sure.

I do know that Fender's Alex Gregory model was designed to have the 7th string be a High A (and not a Low B).

Indeed! In younger days I wanted to be able to play Message In A Bottle but that C#9 shape Andy Summers zipped around the neck with just kills my little hand in seconds. Finally, it occured to me to move the D# over from the G to the B string, and suddenly the whole thing is easy as pie. The minute I could do it the inclination abandoned me, though.

Deftones are an example of a band that plays with seven string guitars by the way, if that's your kind of thing. It ain't mine...

I think that Steve Vai would play any stringed instrument put in front of him.

Coal Chamber, a goth band, guitarist Meegs plays a 7-string.

I actually took the hard road with Message In A Bottle. I've done enough 'virtuoso' playing to have become accustomed to the stretches - but that one does hurt after a while.

Two others that I can think of offhand from recent playing are the clean intro Badd4 to "Always With Me, Always With You" by Satriani (I do it differently because I can't do what Joe does here) and the end of "The Four Horsemen" by Metallica where they show the 19-15-12(e) pull-offs (I can do this if I setup for it quickly - in a pinch I'd do the 19-15(e)-17(b) instead).

looks awesome but a bit outdated imo.
like prev comments, leave the fender line alone but i wouldn't say i wouldn't buy one if they decided to make them and if they looked abit more modern.

whos guitar is it anyway?

i think the ibanez universe is best 7 string to get
